Cameron Stark- NHS Highland Quality Approach / Cameron spoke of IHI Triple Aim initiative is the quality of care either 0% or 100%. He also mentioned the Highland Quality approach which looks at focus, methodology and culture. He spoke of the model for improvement as a circle, plan – Do – Study and act. He told us that the Scottish patient Safety programme was very successful and the first country to try on this scale, you are 17% less likely to die in hospital now than in the mid 80`s because of the changes. Lean is another tool that they use in the NHS and it is reducing the waste but making a better outcome. It was asked if Lean could link in with the 3rd sector through referrals etc. He replied that in principle it could. / The presentation can be found
Cameron Stark
Angela Beardsley – open secret / Angela explained that open Secret was- a service for individual and families affected by childabuse and trauma, the aim of the charity has changed over time. They have just started to introduce EMRD (Eye Development Desensitisation & Reprocessing therapy); this is being suggested as a highly effective form of therapeutic intervention for people suffering from trauma and PTSD.
Angela discussed open secret could working with organisations collaboratively in the Highlands to deliver EMRD or just counselling in general. /
Roy Harrison – Veterans First Point Highland / Roy explained that the V1P aim is to have better services for ex forces personal and their families. They are funded by the NHS and work in partnership with Poppy Scotland. They are there to signpostpeople to services; they do have a trained psychologist to help if needed. They are there to Listen, Orientate, Connect and improve health and wellbeing. It is for everyone that has served, from 1 day in the forces and merchant navy. /
How can the 3rd Sector develop stronger links with the NHS / Gwen explained what her aim was for this session but noted that as we were running over time and it would take a wee while and it might be better to delay till the next meeting so more time could be spent on this. She also noted that she would like to ask the NHS the same questions and compare the results.
Members Updates / Isobel Murray – they have quarterly forum meetings if people can’t attend they can send in an update. Have started a good morning Sutherland programme where they call people to say hello and make sure they have had a good night. They are away to start a pilot in foot care awareness, which will also be a be-friending service. If the ESCCF can’t deal with it they signpost to a service that can.
Keith Walker – with the CSDMF money they have set up a dementia face to face befriending group. They are hoping to expand their mental health befriending to a face to face service.
Christine Nicol–they are continuing to develop. They are concentrating in Lochaber to develop and expand and then will expand further north in the Highlands.
Lee Gordon – they are focusing to develop referrals from the rehab unit in Raigmore. The plan is to set up a meeting and get a link worker to go into the rehab unit. They want to start the relationship with the person in the hospital as due to anxieties they might not make contact after they have been discharged.
Angela Beardsley – Commented that Gwen is brilliant. She suggested the idea of a pack withthe different organisation to give to people who need it. Gwen shared an idea she had of setting up a stand where the public sector can come and find out what 3rd sector organisation are available to help them
Mary Sinclair–Senscot support social enterprise there are 120 members in the health and social care branch. It is a time to share. You can be part of it, or can be on the newsletter and mailing list
Nicholas Hunt – just at the forum for information as 3rd week in the Job
Gill Maclennan – supports 358 adults with autism, they can get access to diagnosis’s progress. They provide help with benefits and housing. 1 adult wrote a book and the money raised is going to Autism initiatives
Maggie Lawson – provide transport for older people and disabled. They provide a shopping hub, befriending, music nights and help accessibility issues. They are recruiting volunteers that are younger, who are doing expressive art. We are trying to spread the word in schools what it is like to live with difficulties.
Emma Spark – they offer mental health 1st aid courses for Children
AOCB / Gwen Harrison –
  • The Scottish Community Alliance are looking for people to apply to go and visit other groups (from Mary at Senscot)
  • It was agreed that people are finding the mailings useful.
  • On the 4th of November there is a partnership and procurement workshop
  • On the 3rd November there is a Focus group for people that are involved in providing supervision
  • In Skye there is an event on community transport looking at electric cars and other issues on the island.
  • If you offer Health and wellbeing in Ullapool or are looking to extend your services to this area, there is an event you have stand at or run a workshop 19th November
  • Seaboard cares are doing something similar Sat 22nd October
  • Dingwall are looking to set up an Men’s shed
  • The psychological trauma unit are looking for a 3rd Sector rep.
  • Gwen asked and the group agreed to share details of people who attended the forum – she asked everyone to send an email with the name their organisation and a sentence about what they do.
Training Requests
People are looking for training on group facilitating and mental health 1st aid for children.
