PE & Sport at Bishop Loveday in Term 2, 2016-2017

We have continued to have reasonable weather this autumn. Great news for those outdoor PE lessons and after school sports clubs.

Curriculum lessons

This term has seen the following take place during PE lessons:

§  EYU – Have been very busy rehearsing their dances for their Christmas show.

§  Year 1 – Have been practising dances for the Christmas show. They have also been performing dances relating to their topic, Paw, claws & whiskers. These were based on Fables. Agility & coordination activities were practised during outdoor sessions.

§  Year 2 – Have been outside using large balls. Controlling them using feet – football and throwing & catching – netball.

§  Year 3 –Have been introduced to hockey skills during lessons. 3LM have started their swimming lessons at Spiceball. They have also been practising their dances for the Christmas performances.

§  Year 4- Have been building on their hockey skills from last year. Games have been focused on their dribbling, passing, receiving and intercepting skills. 4SJ have completed their swimming sessions. 4SV have all completed level 5 of the Gymnastic Awards.

§  Year 5 – 5CS have finished their swimming lessons this term whilst 5PA have started theirs’. During outdoor PE all year 5 pupils have continued to have had the benefit of a Hockey Coach from Tudor Hall. Mini games finished the coaching sessions off nicely. As a follow on from these sessions, 14 year 5 pupils attended a festival at Tudor Hall – more details in the competition section.

§  Year 6 – Have welcomed a netball coach from Bloxham School who has worked with them during their Friday PE lessons. These sessions culminated in an inter class competition at the end of term.

School Clubs

§  Clubs have continued to thrive this term with 2 dance clubs also starting. A club for pupils in years 1, 2 & 3 runs on a Monday and on Tuesdays it’s the turn of years 4, 5 & 6. Thanks to Miss Lauren Shaw who is running these for us. A new Activators Club is also running on Monday lunchtimes led by Mrs Zeale & Mrs Khaliq.

§  Over 120 pupils have regularly attended sports clubs after school this term. This is an amazingly high number – thanks for all your support.

Competitions

§  Our year 3 & 4 footballers competed in the North Oxfordshire 5-a-side football finals held at Banbury United. Qualifying schools from across the Banbury, Warriner, Bicester & Kidlington areas took part. We finished 4th overall which means the next stop is the County Finals next spring.

§  Our year 5 & 6 swimming teams took part in the NOSSP Banbury Area gala. Teams from Hanwell Fields, Hill View and St John’s also took part. Our girls team finished 1st and the boys team finished 2nd after a tense “swim off”. These results meant that both teams qualified for the North Oxfordshire Finals.

§  In the NOSSP finals, teams from Banbury, BGN, Bicester, Kidlington & Warriner partnerships competed to see who represented North Oxfordshire in the County Finals next year. In a closely fought contest, BLS boys team came 3rd and our girls team finished 2nd. These results mean that our girls’ team will be competing in the next round, with our boys narrowly missing out. Well done to everyone.

§  24 cross country runners who qualified through the Banbury Area event, attended the North Oxfordshire Finals at Sibford School. Teams from Bicester, Kidlington and the Banbury area all took part after winning their respective local competitions. Up to 70 children competed in each race across all year groups. Full results are available on the website.

§  All Year 2 pupils spent a lovely afternoon at BGN taking part in a multi skills competition. The event was run in the style of sports day races with every child having the opportunity to take part. We entered 6 teams and competed against teams from Orchards Fields. Unfortunately another school pulled out at the last minute. 2 of our teams finished 1st & 2nd.

§  We had our first Girls football match against a team from Hill View this term. A great game with the final result 5-5. Well done girls!

§  Our netball team had their first fixture of the year also against Hill View. Their training session really paid off as the matched finished in an 8-1 victory to BLS. Fabulous teamwork girls! A member of staff from Hill View commented on how our team had improved from last year. Well done girls for all the hard work you put in at training.

§  Unfortunately a years 5 & 6 boy’s football match had to be cancelled due to the weather. Hopefully we can rearrange it for next term.

Equipment

§  Our outdoor PE cupboard has had a “make-over”. New shelving will give us a much better space for storage and make it easier to access all equipment.

Staff & courses

§  Our sports coordinator attended the NOSSP PE Network Day. These happen twice a year and usually involve presentations, workshops and time to work with other schools. This one was all about the benefits of an active School and looked at how just short bursts of activity can be used in the classroom. Feedback was given to Mrs Ridley who has passed on information and ideas at a staff meeting.

§  Cathy Stafford attended the Differentiation in PE workshop run by NOSSP.

Impact on children

·  Staff attending courses & workshops ensure they are kept up to date with developments in School Sport and widening their knowledge and increasing confidence in the delivery of PE.

·  Increased number of Inter school competitions, allowing our pupils to represent our School against other schools. Celebrating success and encouraging all to take part. A sense of pride is felt by all pupils and the opportunity to participate later this year at County Finals will be another new experience.

·  Continuing to develop links with other schools, both Primary and secondary, state and independent thus increasing opportunities for our children.

·  A wide range of PE offered in lessons and clubs, encouraging pupils to try different activities.

·  Giving pupils the opportunity to take part in after school sport as part of a healthy lifestyle choice.

·  Developing links with community clubs, giving pupils a chance to try different sports, and making the pathway easier to access sport out of school time.

·  Encouraging pupils to choose a healthy lifestyle by taking part in regular exercise.

·  Inter school matches for our after school clubs to compete in allows pupils to represent their school and mix and meet with their peers from other schools.
