ENGLISH PROJECT: GREAT BRITAIN
FINAL PRODUCT: an oral presentation about Great Britain accompanied by a poster / PowerPoint presentation, a worksheet for your classmates and a script.
Duration of the presentation: about 10 -12 minutes long (in general)
Type of information: short and general introduction on the UK and the English speaking world, British institutions, education, celebrations, William Shakespeare, etc.
You will finish with a final remark on your opinion and thanks to the audience (conclusion).
Sources of information: the Internet, info in books at the school library or at the AACI, etc.
Steps:
Decide on the roles of the members of the group, their tasks and how you will organize yourselves including meetings and deadlines.
Gather the information
Decide on the relevance and interest of the information
Decide how to organize it
Write a script. This is what each of you will actually say, similar to the scripts of plays or films.
Example:
Miguel: Good morning. Today Sofia and I will talk to you about…...
Now Sofia will ……
Sofia: ……
Miguel: … I hope you ….Thanks for …..
Make sure the text you produce is based on the gathered information
but it is not a copy of the texts you based your presentation on or
too similar to them (No cut-and-paste). Plagiarism is a serious
academic crime.
Remember to include the sources (Bibliography including consulted
websites).
Design a worksheet with an activityor two for your classmates to do during your presentation. It must be something they can easily complete while listening to you that doesn’t distract them from the presentation. It can’t be too short or too long. It depends on the amount of info provided during the presentation. Examples: fill in the blanks with one word, true/false statements or multiple choice activities. Which of the following is not….? Do not include letter soups, for instance. The exercises must include a selection of important information concerning the book. And the sentences can’t be a copy of sentences you will utter during the presentation. Make sure the information in the worksheet follows the order of the presentation. The worksheet must include the following information in its heading: name of the project, topic, group number, members of the group, date and student. The last two items are for your classmates to complete. The design and content will be taken into account. If possible, try to make the worksheet fit in one sheet.
Prepare the key (the answers) on a separate sheet of paper. You will hand it in the first time you hand in the project for supervision.
Prepare the front page for your written presentation
- Project: Great Britain
- Topic:
- Group No:
- Course:
- Teacher: Ms/r. ………………………..
- School:
- Date: (The date when you hand in the draft)
The first things to hand in area folder with the front page, the first draft of the script, the bibliography, the worksheet and the key (printed). Deadline: ______ (You may consult me beforehand if necessary) After I give the material back to you with some comments, correct the script and/or worksheet with its key if necessary.
Prepare a poster / PowerPoint presentation. It must be visually clear and appealing. You cannot use the poster/PPP to remember information. It must be visual support for the audience, chart, mind mapping, spider graph, etc.
Rehearse the presentation with your partners beforehand and adjust it if necessary including the duration. Also practise how to move around. Make sure you check the pronunciation of the words you will use. Also make sure you can explain the terms you will use, if necessary.
If you want, you can make tidy smallcards with a few notes to use during the presentation. You cannot have the script. You may include little information, for example, the sequence in which you will present it or a number or name you may forget, etc. It must be neat and it can’t be the whole text.
The day of the presentation
- You must have the following things: your written script (first draft and final copy), the original worksheet and key, and a copy of the corrected ones for me, copies of the worksheet for all your classmates, your memory stick (I would have two) and your cards if any.
- Before you begin, set up your visual support, hand out the worksheets, and give me the draft and last copy of your script, worksheet and key.
- During the presentation make sure you look at your classmates, smile and use the visual support by pointing at it as you speak. Don’t move your hands around, bite your nails, and fiddle with your hair or anything of the sort. The attention of the audience must be on your presentation, not on distractors.
- I will take into account the appeal, clarity and relevance of the visual support, the task achievement and content, the creativity, your intonation, pronunciation and use of stress, your fluency and your body language, grammar and vocabulary.
- After you finish, collect the worksheets for correction. You will split them among the members of the group for correction and give them to me after correcting them the following class.
