COURSEREPETITION

1.CourseRepetition Overview

UnderBoardPolicy 4225,students may bepermittedto enroll morethan onetimeina creditcourseifthecourseorthestudent meetscertaincriteria.Studentswill notbe permittedtoenrollinthesamecreditcourse morethanthreetimes,exceptinspecial circumstances orwhenthecourseisdesignedandidentifiedintheGeneralCatalogas repeatableandisapprovedbytheDistrictincompliancewithcurrentlimitsestablished inTitle5.Allrepeatenrollmentsaresubjecttotherestrictionsandconditionsstipulated inTitle5,Sections 55024,55040-55045, 55253,56029,58161.

2.Definitions

Forthepurposeofcourserepetitionandallrelatedregulations,thefollowingtermsshall apply:

A. “Courserepetition”occurswhenastudenthaspreviouslyreceivedan evaluative(“A’,“B”, “C”,“D”,“F”,“C/NC”, “P/NP”) or non-evaluativesymbol (“W”,“I”)inacreditcourse,assetforthinsection55023,re-enrollsinthat courseandreceives an evaluative or non-evaluativesymbol.

B.“Substandardacademicwork”meanscourseworkforwhichan evaluative gradingsymbol “D”,“F”,“NP”, or “NC” has beenrecorded.

C.“Satisfactoryacademic work” means coursework for which an evaluativegradingsymbol “A”,“B”,“C”,“P” has been recorded.

C.Repeatablecourses” aredesignedtobetaken multipletimesandinclude coursesinintercollegiateathletics,intercollegiateacademic or vocational competition, andcourses thattheUC or CSU requirestudents tocomplete multipletimes inordertocompleteabaccalaureatedegreewithoutdelay.

D. “Activeparticipatory courses” arethosecourseswhereindividualstudy or groupassignmentsarethe basic meansbywhichlearning objectivesare obtained and include courses in physical education, visual arts, and performingarts.

E.“Coursesthatarerelatedincontent”arethosecourseswithsimilarprimary educational activitiesinwhichskill levelsor variations areseparatedinto distinctcourseswithdifferentlearningoutcomesforeachlevelorvariation.

Thesegroupsofcoursesthatarerelatedincontentarereferredto asfamilies ofcourses. For example, oneoftenfamiliesinthe ArtDepartmentis Drawing and includes: Drawing Fundamentals, Drawing Composition, Beginning FigureDrawing, andIntermediateFigure drawing.

F.“Enrollment”occurswhenastudentreceivesanevaluativeornon-evaluative symbol pursuanttosection55023inacreditcourse.

3.Non-RepeatableCourses

Course Repetition Guidelines

A.CourseRepetitiontoAlleviate SubstandardAcademicWork:

BoardPolicy4225authorizestwo(2)repetitionsofacourseinwhichastudent earnsa substandard grade(D,F,NC,NP) orwasassigneda withdrawal(“W”). Studentsdonotneedtosubmit aPetitiontoRepeataCoursewhenrepeatinga courseforthefirsttimeafterreceivingafinalcoursegradeofD,F,NP,NC,orW. Ifthestudentagainearnsasubstandardgradeorwithdraws fromaclassafter the firstrepeatandwishestorepeatthecourse asecondtime,he/she mustbegranted priorapprovalofaPetitiontoRepeataCourseby theDean, StudentServices.The firsttwosubstandardgradeswillbeexcludedincomputingthestudent’sGPA.(Title

5, Section55042).

Whenpermissiontorepeatisrequired,students may secureaPetitiontoRepeat a CoursefromtheAdmissionsandRecordsOfficeorwebsiteandsubmititforreview totheDean, Student Services. ThedecisionoftheDean,Student Services,may be appealedtotheVice President,StudentServices.Students not meetingthe above criteria are blockedfromrepeatingcoursesatthetime ofregistration.

B. ExtenuatingCircumstances:Studentsmaypetitiontorepeatacoursewherea previoussatisfactory orsubstandardgradewasearned,onetime,for extenuating circumstancesbased uponverifiedcasesofaccidents,illness,or other circumstancesbeyond thecontrolofthestudent(Title5,section55045).TheDistrict may permitathirdrepetitionofacourseinanefforttoalleviatepriorsubstandard academicwork,providedtheDistrict finds thatthereare extenuatingcircumstances whichjustifyanadditionalrepetition.Enrollmentinthecoursemustberequested andapprovedthrough thepetition process(thesepetitionsarereviewedonacase- by-case basis bytheDean,StudentServices).

C. SignificantLapseofTime: Studentsmayrepeatacourse,onetime,wherea satisfactory gradewasearnedafteralapseofnolessthan36months,ifoneofthe followingconditions ismet:

1.TheDistricthasproperlyestablishedarecencyprerequisiteforacourseor programpursuanttoTitle 5,section55003

2.Anotherinstitution ofhigher educationto whichthestudentseekstotransfer hasestablishedarecencyrequirementwhichthestudentwillnotbeableto satisfy withoutrepeatingthecourseinquestion.Pursuanttopetition,theDistrict may allowrepetitionwherelessthan36monthshaveelapsedifthestudent documentstherepetitionisnecessaryforthestudent’stransfertotheinstitution ofhigher education.

IftheDistrictdeterminesthatastudentneedstorepeatanactiveparticipatory course,as definedby Title5, Section55000,inphysical educationorvisual or performingarts, or anactive participatorycoursethatis relatedincontent(i.e.,family ofcourses),asdefinedbyTitle5,Section55000,duetosignificantlapseoftime, thatrepetitionshallbecountedinapplyingthelimit onrepetitionsset forthinTitle5, Section55040(c)exceptthat,ifthestudenthasalreadyexhaustedthenumberof repetitionspermitted, anadditionalrepetitionduetosignificantlapseoftimemaybe permittedor requiredbytheDistrict.

Enrollment in the course must be requested and approved through the petition process (thesepetitions arereviewed onacase-by-case basis by theDean, Student Services). Substandardgradesmaybeexcludedincomputingthestudent’s GPA.

D.VariableUnitOpen-Entry/Open-ExitCourses: Studentsmaybepermittedto enrollinvariable unit open-entry/open-exitcoursesas many times asnecessary to enablethemtocompletetheentirecurriculumofthecourseonce. (Title5,Section

55044)

Student maynotrepeatvariable unitopen-entry/open-exitcourses unless:

1. Thecourseis requiredfor legallymandatedtraining; or

2. Thecourseisaspecialclassforstudentswithdisabilitieswhichneedstobe repeated;or

3. Repetitionofthecourseis justifiedbyextenuatingcircumstances; or

4. Thestudentwishes to repeatthecoursetoalleviatesubstandardwork.

Wheneverastudentenrollsinaphysicaleducationactivity courseofferedforopen- entry/open-exit,theenrollmentwill count as a repetitionofthecourse.

When acourseisrepeatedduetoasignificantlapseoftime, theDistrict may disregardthepreviousgradeandcreditwhencomputing astudent’sgradepoint average.

E. Cooperative WorkExperienceEducationCourses: Studentsareallowedto repeat anoccupational workexperiencecourseifonly onecourseinagiven fieldis offered andthatcourseis notoffered as avariable unitopen-entry/open-exitcourse. Whereonlyoneworkexperiencecourseisoffered,studentsareallowedtorepeatacooperativeworkexperiencecourseaslong asthey donotexceedthelimitsonthe numberofunits ofcooperativework experiencesetforthinTitle5Section55253(a).

F. LegallyMandatedTraining: Studentsareallowedtorepeatacoursewithout petitionwhenrepetitionisnecessary toenablethatstudenttomeetalegally mandatedtrainingrequirement asaconditionofvolunteeror paidemployment. Studentscanrepeatsuchcoursesanynumberoftimes,eveniftheyreceiveda gradeofCorbetter;however,thegradeandcreditearned by thestudenteachtime willbeincludedincalculationsofthestudent’sgradepointaverage.Enrollmentin thecourse must berequested andapprovedthroughthepetitionprocess. The studentis requiredtocertifyor documentthatcourserepetitionis legallymandated.

G. SignificantChangeinIndustryorLicensureStandards: Studentsmaypetition theDistricttorepeatacourse asaresultofasignificantchangeinindustry or licensurestandardssuchthatrepetitionofthecourseisnecessaryforemployment orlicensure.Students canrepeatsuchcoursesany numberoftimes,evenifthey receivedagradeofCorbetter;however,thegradeandcredit earnedby thestudent eachtimewillbeincludedincalculations ofthestudent’sgradepoint average. Enrollment in the course must be requested and approved through the petition process.Thestudentisrequiredtocertify ordocumentthattherehasbeena significantchangeinindustryor licensurestandardsnecessitatingcourserepetition.

H. Repetition forDisability Accommodation: Studentswithdisabilitiescanrepeata special class for students with disabilities any number of times when an individualizeddeterminationverifiesthatsuchrepetitionisrequiredasadisability- related accommodation. Repetitionofaspecialclassispermittedto providean accommodationtoastudent’seducationallimitationsunderthe following circumstances: (Title5, Section56029[a],[b],[c])

1. Whencontinuingsuccessofthestudentinothergeneraland/orspecialclasses is dependentonadditional repetitions ofaspecific special class;

2. When additionalrepetitionsofaspecificspecialclass areessentialtocompleting astudent’s preparationfor enrollmentintoother regular or special classes;or

3. Whenthestudent has astudent educational contractwhichinvolvesagoalother thancompletionofthespecialclass inquestionandrepetitionofthecoursewill furtherachievement ofthatgoal.

I. SpecialCircumstancesforCourseRepetitionforDisabilityAccommodation:The District may,uponpetitionby thestudent,permitathirdrepetitionofacourseinan effortto alleviate prior substandard academic workwhenanindividualized determination that such a repetition is required as a disability-related accommodationfor astudentwith disabilitiesas specifiedinTitle 5,Section56029.

4.RepeatableCourses

Repeatability ofActiveParticipatory Courses:

Activity Courses:Activeparticipatory Repeatable coursesinclude courseswherethestudent:meetscourseobjectivesby repeatingasimilarprimary educationalactivity;buildsonskillsorproficienciesby supervisedrepetition and practice;andlearnsobjectivesviaparticipatoryexperienceinindividualstudyor groupassignments. As delineatedin Title 5,section55041,theDistrictwill only designatethefollowingtypes ofcoursesas repeatable:

1. Courses forwhichrepetitionisnecessarytomeetthemajorrequirements of CSUorUCforcompletionofa bachelor’s degree. TheDistrictmustretain supporting documentationthatverifiesthattherepetitionisnecessarytomeet the majorrequirementsofCSUorUC forcompletionofabachelor’sdegree within4years.

2. Intercollegiate athletics, as defined in Title 5, Section 55000, where enrollmentinthecourseandcoursesthat arerelatedincontent, as definedin section55000,islimitedtonomorethanfourtimesforsemestercourses. TheDistrictshall claimnomorethan 350 hoursof attendance for each enrolledstudentineachfiscalyear foreachsportinwhichthestudent participates.Ofthe350hoursofattendance, nomorethan175hourscanbe claimed forstudentenrollmentincoursesdedicatedtothesport,andnomore than175hours canbeclaimedfor studentenrollmentincourses thatfocus on conditioningorskilldevelopmentforthesport(Title5,Sections58161(d),

58162).

3. Intercollegiate academic or vocational competition, as defined in Title 5, section 55000,where enrollmentinthecourseandcourses thatarerelatedin content,asdefinedinsection55000,islimitedtonomorethanfourtimes for semester courses.This enrollmentlimitation applies evenifthestudent receivesasubstandardgradeor“W” during oneormoreoftheenrollmentsin suchacourseor petitionsfor repetitionduetospecial circumstancesas providedinTitle5,Section55045.

TheDistrictwillidentify thecourseswhicharetoberepeatable andpublishthislistin theGeneral Catalog andtheCourseOutline ofRecord. (Title5,Section55041).

Designationofrepeatablecoursesandthe numberoftimesthey may betakenfor credit areasfollows:

“AB” maybetaken2timesfor credit “AC” maybetaken3timesfor credit “AD” maybetaken4timesfor credit

Thesecourses,however,may not betakenconcurrently. Students willbeblocked at thetime ofregistration iftheyattempttoenroll in anunauthorizedcourse.

All enrollmentsinrepeatablecourseswill counttowardstotal allowablerepetitions.A studentwillbeconsidered“enrolled”any timethey receiveanevaluativeornon- evaluativesymbolon theirrecord. Thegradereceived foreach enrollmentwill be includedfor computingthestudent’sGPA.

Students enrolledincoursesthepermittednumber oftimeswillreceivecredit. A CourseAuditOption(SeeAP 4070- Auditing andAuditingFees)isavailablefor courseattendanceinrepeatablecourses oncetherepetitionlimithas beenreached.

5.CoursesthatareRelatedinContent/FamiliesofCourses:

In2012,theBoardofGovernorsfinalizednewregulationsinTitle5governingthe repetitionofcreditcoursesintheCaliforniaCommunity Collegesystemthatare effectiveFall2013.Thesenew regulationshaveeliminatedrepeatability inPhysical Education,Theater,Dance, andVisualArts,and only ahandful ofMusiccourses remainrepeatable. Whathasnotchangedisthenumberofactiveparticipatory coursesthatstudents cantakeifthecoursesarerelatedincontent(commonly referredtoasafamilyofcourses).Whilestudentswillnotinmostcasesbeallowed torepeataspecificactiveparticipatorycourse,theycanstillenrollinaseriesof active participatorycourses thatarerelatedincontentamaximum offour times.

Studentswillbelimitedtotakingamaximumoffourcoursesin any onefamily of courses. Thisenrollmentlimitationisretroactiveandthefourcoursemaximumwill includeoldrepeatablecourses asidentifiedinfamilies.

For example,a familyofcoursesintheArt DepartmentisDrawingandthenew courses(non-repeatable)inthefamily areArt8-DrawingFundamentals, Art9– DrawingComposition,Art 10– BeginningFigureDrawing, and Art150–Intermediate FigureDrawing.

ART10AD--FigureDrawing(repeatable3times,notofferedafterSpring2013)will beincludedintheArt DrawingFamily forthepurposesoflimiting enrollmentto4 coursesinthefamily.StudentswhohaveenrolledinART10AD2times,priortoFall

2013,cantake only twomorecoursefromthefamily. Studentswhohaveenrolledin ART10AD4times, priortoFall2013,willnotbepermittedtotakeadditionalcourses fromthefamily.

Students may enroll in activity courses in physical education, visual arts, or performing arts. Such courses may not be repeated for more than four semesters. This limit applies even if the student receives a substandard grade or “W” during one or more enrollments or if a student petitions for repetition due to extenuating circumstances.

Inaddition,all evaluativeandnon-evaluative gradescounttowardthe four enrollment limitation andallgradesandcreditsreceivedcountin computing thestudentsGPA. Theone andonly exceptioniswhenacourseisrepeatedpursuanttoasignificant lapseoftime,theDistrictmayallowthepreviousgradeandcredittobedisregarded incomputingthestudent’s GPA.

6.FinalityofGrades/Student Records:

Whenacourseis repeatedtoalleviateasubstandardgrade,themostrecent gradeis usedforthecalculationofthegrade point average(GPA).Courses that arerepeated shallberecorded onthestudent's permanentacademicrecordusing anappropriate symbol. Annotating thepermanentacademicrecordshall bedone inamannerthat all work remains legible,insuringatrueandcompleteacademic history.

Withregardtostudentswithadisability(see3.Habove),theDistrictwillallowthe previousgradeandcredittobedisregardedincomputingthestudent'sGPAeach timethecourseis repeated. (Title5, Section 56029)

7.CourseWithdrawals - Limitationon Repeats:

PleaseseeAP4228regardinglimitationsonthenumberoftimesastudentmay repeat,withdrawfromacourseandreceivea"W" ontheir transcript.
