Congratulations to Maxxamillion Hamm (‘11), who has completed his Eagle Project and will be awarded his Eagle Scout Medal at an Eagle Court of Honor in March. Maxx is a member of Troop #73. His project was to build a bridge and trellis and construction of a stone pathway and creek bed in the Christ the King Catholic Church Prayer Park, located behind the school. Congratulations!

The Indiana All-State Band is the top honor band in our state. Over 1100 high school students audition for less than 200 spots in the two All-State Bands. Congratulations to freshman MADDI SHAKE (percussion) for making the TOP Indiana All-State Honor Band (only the second student in Cathedral’s history to make this group) and to sophomore CHRIS JONES (trombone) for being selected as an alternate to the band. We are SO proud of these students as they auditioned against the VERY BEST band instrumentalists in our state! Maddi (and hopefully Chris!) will be rehearsing and performing at Purdue University on All-State weekend (March 11-13). GREAT JOB!

Butler University has selected four of our students to their All-Star Honor Band – senior AUSTIN BAZILIO (trumpet), juniors ALEX LUCHT (tuba) and EDWARD STEPPE (baritone/trombone), and sophomore CHRIS JONES (trombone). They will rehearse on campus at Butler during the weekend of February 18-20, and perform at Clowes Hall on February 20. Congratulations to these outstanding musicians!

“LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER NEWS:”

The Battle of the Books team is in full swing toward the April 14 competition at Ben Davis. The 8-member team, moderated by Mrs. Jenny Herron, reads and studies 8 different Eliot Rosewater winners (Best Young Adult Hoosier Books) and prepares for written tests and lightning-round stages of competition against surrounding area high school teams. The team includes: Jackson McGrath, Brenna Holland, Bailey Lewis, Danila Burnham, Kaylee Titsworth, Audrey Gelb, Abigail Helvering, and Willy Dimond.

Several entries have already been received for the library/media center’s “What Makes You hAPPy?” best educational app contest. Students are encouraged to share their favorite educational apps for use on iPhone, iPod, iPad, or Smartphone. See a librarians for details, the deadline is February 18. The winner receives a $25.00 iTunes gift cardJ

Recently our technology crew installed the computer game “Civilization IV” on one of the library/media center’s computers. Students are welcome to access this and play during resource and before & after school. Recent studies indicate that educational gaming is gaining popularity among educators, especially in math and science. “Civilization IV” has been reviewed by educational journals as instructive in social and political history.

The American Library Association announced January 10th the top young adult media awards, and several of these winners are displayed now in our library, available for check out by students, parents, and staff. Remember, because we’re an Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library branch, items checked out at any IMCPL branch can be returned here at CHS, and students may request any IMCPL item be sent here for check out.

If anyone has tickets to events i.e. Pacers, Ice, IRT, Circus etc that you are unable to use please contact Mike Feeney at 968-7348 or We would like to make unused tickets available to our teachers or students who would otherwise not be able to attend these events.

Dear parents of seniors,

The senior class has traditionally attended a Shakespearean play at the IRT. We are continuing that tradition by having the seniors attend a matinee production of IRT’s In Acting Shakespeare on Monday, February 21. The tickets cost $9.25, and students need to bring that money to their English teachers as soon as possible. Teachers would appreciate if students could bring exact change or pay by check made out to Cathedral High School. Their payment of that money is your approval of their attendance.

Transportation is not provided by Cathedral High School, so students will need to drive themselves. We urge them to carpool with other students. The most reasonable parking rates can be found in the Circle Center Mall parking garages. We will give them a map to the theatre. The students will attend the matinee that begins at 10:00 AM. We ask that they meet us at the IRT by 9:40. The play will last approximately two hours. After the performance, the students are released for the day. They do not report to school in the morning, and they are free after the performance.

Finally, we will be discussing theatre etiquette and asking students to dress appropriately for the play. Because the students represent Cathedral High School, we require them to be on their best behavior. We ask young men to wear shirts and ties and dress pants. Young ladies may wear appropriate length dresses or skirts or dress pants. No students should wear jeans. We appreciate your support in this area.

If you have any problems or questions, please contact Mrs. Keyes at Cathedral High School.

Please email Mrs. Rose Egan () if you have questions.
