RE: Appointment of Director of Community and Civic Partnerships
The theme of this year's Faculty Convocation—“University-Community Relations"—ties to our Millennium Strategic Plan calling for greater engagement of the University in the community. For years, our institution has had significant relations with and impact on our broader community—largely as a product of unit by unit initiatives, often with little coordination and much duplication.
It is now time to promote and celebrate our larger community impact. Accordingly, we are pleased to announce that Anitere Flores has accepted our invitation to become the Director of Community and Civic Partnerships for Florida International University. Anitere has been working with the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness since November 2004 with a special focus on accountability issues for the Board of Governors. Prior to that, Ms. Flores served as FIU's Director of State Relations—advocating for our institution before the State Legislature and the Governor's Office, among others. A graduate of FIU (political science) with an advanced degree in law from the University of Florida, Anitere was elected to the State Legislature in November 2004, and represents District 114 (which includes FIU's University Park Campus) in Tallahassee.
Anitere will work closely with the Provost's Office, President's Office, and the individual academic units to facilitate new partnerships and provide some coordination of those that already exist. We believe that her credentials, deep experience in and credibility with our community, and passion for our academic mission will augur well for success in this new assignment.
We wish Anitere well in this new responsibility and thank her for her dedication to Florida International University.
