Dear Parents, September 2015

This year your child will pursue a challenging curriculum with many special opportunities. Mr. Fox and Mrs. Olsen are very excited to be working with your child. Below you will find vital information about the fifth and sixth grade classes.

Classroom Rules and Discipline Procedures

The following classroom rules will be used this year.

1.  Be courteous to others.

2.  Respect the learning environment for all.

3.  Use class time wisely.

4.  Listen and follow directions.

5.  Have all your school materials in class daily.

6.  Exhibit good behavior outside the classroom.

7.  Return communications requiring a signature promptly.

Consequences of not abiding by the rules may result in STEPS (our 6-8 grade behavior program), a lower citizenship grade, possible time out from recess and/or lunch, possible visits to the office to meet with an administrator, and notes, e-mails, and phone calls home (NOT our favorite thing to do).

Assignments and Homework

On top of official nightly homework, assignments given during the day and not completed in class will be considered additional homework. Your child may have a variety of long-term assignments such as research, critical thinking activities, reports, and presentations. Please contact us if your child is spending an unreasonable amount of time on homework so we can work together to resolve the problem.

·  When absent, it is the student’s responsibility to make up missed work in the appropriate amount of time (one day absent = one day’s delay on turning in work). It is important to note that being absent does not excuse you from doing the work.

When absent, students should keep track of missed work through our websites, a trusted classmate, or both. Being responsible for catching up with the missed work is vital.

Physical Education

All of our students partner with all 6th grade students and meet 2x/week. We work on sportsmanship, game playing, and conditioning. Whether little athletes or not, we expect all students to put forth their best effort and do so with a positive attitude. Their grade will be based on the following: attitude, proper attire (athletic shoes and appropriate clothing), and effort.

Grading

Assignments not completed in a timely manner will cause grades to be significantly lower. Most often, any assignment that is nightly homework must be completed and turned in the next day to be eligible for points.

In many cases (though not all) we will accept late work. Eligible work may be turned in up to one week late – at a loss of points (to be determined by the teacher). After one school week, late work will no longer be accepted.

If a student takes an assignment home that is stamped with “re-do”, he/she will not receive credit until it is received and completed within the set amount of time (which may vary on a case by case basis).

Communication/Student Work

Each week you will receive an envelope with your child’s graded work and notices/bulletins from the school. This envelope is our way to communicate with you about your child, and receive feedback from you, as well. Therefore we expect our students to return the envelopes promptly the next school day.

What you will find in the envelopes:

1.  Graded work

2.  Returned classwork/homework

3.  Stamped “redo” work that the student needs to redo on a new piece of paper. Usually this will require a parent signature. The original work must be returned as well.

4.  Graded work requiring a parent signature (usually due to a poor grade)

5.  District/School announcements

6.  PTA announcements

7.  City of Santee announcements

With the envelope, we ask that you return ONLY the papers that require your signature and any reworked item your child needed to do. All other papers are yours to keep.

Planner

Daily, the students will fill out a planner in class with assignments listed. Students are expected to write down their assignments throughout the day so they can remember what they did in class and what their homework is for the night.

The idea of the planner is to help the students get (and remain) organized, help you stay informed, and get them prepared for Jr. High, where proper planner use is a key ingredient for their Advisory grade.

Websites

Both Mr. Fox and Mrs. Olsen have websites where you can find out what is happening in class, get updates on homework and upcoming events. You can access our websites by getting to the Carlton Oaks school site via the Santee District’s website (www.santeesd.net) and finding our names listed alphabetically on the STAFF website. We encourage you to bookmark our sites!

Grades Online

We do our best to update our online grades once/week. We recommend you routinely check your child’s grades. If you already have access to the online grades from last year, terrific. If not, we shall get you the necessary information just as soon as we can.

Please keep pages 1-2 for your records
