Lecturers(chairoftheMGCisexaminer/coordinator): / TheMScGraduationCommittee(MGC)isresponsibleforthesupervisionand assessment.Thecommitteeconsistsofaminimumofthreemembers,that all haveadoctorsdegree.Thechairofthecommitteeisthegraduation professor,andatleast oneofthemembersshouldbe fromanotherresearchgroupwithintheApplied PhysicsdomainofthefacultyofScienceandTechnology(referencemember).In casethegraduationprofessor/chairisnotfromwithintheAppliedPhysicsdomain,thereference membershouldbeaprofessorfromtheAppliedPhysicsdomain.FortheguidelinesseetheOER.
Determiningpassmark / IntheassessmentoftheMScassignment,twomarkswill bedetermined:
(i)Onegradecoversthequality ofthe physical aspectsandtheresearchperformance,
(ii)Onegradecoverstheotherobjectives,concerningtheoralandwrittenreportingaswellasothergeneralaspectsoftheresearch.
Foreachmarkadistinctcoursecodehasbeenassigned.Theassignmentcanonlybefinalizedwhenbothgradesaresix (6)orhigher.

CourseDescription

Courseinformation

TheindividualMScassignmentcomprisesthecompletion ofthemasterprogramAppliedPhysics.Themain objectiveoftheassignmentisthatthestudentlearnsandprovesthat(s)heisableto define,perform, completeandreflectonaresearchprojectintheappliedphysicsdomain withalargedegreeofindependence.

TheassignmentisperformedinoneoftheresearchgroupswithintheApplied Physicsdomainofthefaculty ofScienceandTechnologyoftheUniversityofTwenteunderthesupervisionofaresearcherwithadoctorsdegree andtheresponsibilityofaMScGraduation Committee.

Theassignmentcanbeperformed(partially)withinaresearchgroupoutsidethedomain ofApplied

Physicsoranexternalinstituteororganization.Thisneedsthe approvalofthemasterexaminationcommitteeofAppliedPhysics.

CourseContent

Thestudenthastoperformasubstantialresearchordesignprojectthatmeetsscientificcriteria.Thelevel ofprofundity and complexityisdefinedby thechairof theMScgraduationcommittee.Thestudentcompletestheassignmentwitha writtenreport(theMScthesis)andanoralpublicpresentation.

Inthe masterassignment,theprogramme'sobjectivesaremet,withfocuseson acquiring mostofthelearningoutcomesofthecompleteprogram:

  • athoroughknowledgeofthebasicphysicsandmathematicstheories;
  • amorein-depthknowledge ofoneormoresub-areas ofphysics;
  • knowledgeofphysicaltechnology,includingskillindesigningandapplyingmeasuring equipmentandexperimentaltechniques;
  • orientationintheapplicationareasofappliedphysics;
  • insightintohowthesciencesareinterconnectedandthe relationbetweenscienceandsociety andtheresultingresponsibilities;
  • skillssuchasbeingabletoacquireknowledgeindependently; beingabletocontributecreativelyandsystematicallytosolvingissuesrelatingtothesubject area;beingabletoworkwithcolleagues;
