LEGAL BASIS AND PURPOSE

This guide has been prepared in accordance with Articles 12 and 24 of Graduate Education - Teaching Regulations and Articles 35, 46 and 51 of Erciyes University Graduate Education, Teaching and Examination Regulations. The decisions taken by the relevant supreme council of the university applies the same without the need to change this guide. This guide is intended to determine the principles to be followed in the preparation and writing of thesis and dissertation proposal of English MSc and English PhD programs in Erciyes University Graduate school of Natural and Applied Science, Graduate School of Health Sciences and , Graduate School of Social Sciences.

DELIVERY OF THE THESIS

In order to establish a thesis examining board students must submit 4 copies for MSc and 6 copies for PhD thesis in a plastic files to the head of the department. The head of the department deliver the thesis with the proposal of thesis defense jury to the Graduate school. Documents can be accessed from the documents linkat web pageof Institute. The evaluation and adoption processof the thesis is completed in accordance with regulations of ınstitute. The adopted thesis should be delivered to the institute as covered 5 copies for MSc and 7 copies for PhD .

ERCIYES UNIVERSITY GRADUATE EDUCATION - TEACHING INSTITUTE THESIS PREPARATION AND WRITING GUIDE

This instruction has prepared based on articles (39, 41, 43, 46, 47, 51, 53, 54, 55, 59 and 60) inErciyes University Graduate Education and Teaching Regulations to guide for students in preparation of thesis in accordance with commonly accepted write transfer and scientific principles.

BASIC CHAPTERS AND SCOPE OF THE THESIS

CAUTION: Writing and editing of the thesis is done in the following order. Descriptive details and examples are given below for each section. Please make control + clickfor sample documents (Attachments) that you want to examine.

THE OUTER COVER OF THE THESIS

On the cover of the thesis institute name, title of the thesis, name of the student, thesis supervisor,the department, program (MSc or PhD), city ​​name and date of submission are given respectively.Full tittle of the thesis is written in capital letters.Informations on the cover are arranged as inAppendix12

BLANK PAGE:Unnumbered page located after outer cover and beforeinner cover

THE INSIDE COVER: This page is arranged in the outer cover and placed immediately after the blank page.If the thesis is supported by an organization,explanation related to organizations is given before the city name and date as in the Appendix 13A. explanation related to organizations, department and program (MSC/PhD) are written with 12,14 and 14 punto respectively. The other parts are written with 16 punto.The specified font size are given assuming by Times New Roman font. If it is selected a different font, the appropriate proportioning ​​sizes should be selected.

SCIENTIFIC ETHICS CONFORMITY PAGE: This is a page indicating that the thesis is prepared in accordance with the ethics of scientific work Appendix 14.

SUITABILITY FOR INSTRUCTION GUIDE PAGE:A page containing anaffirming text that the study is prepared in accordance with Erciyes University Graduate Education and Teaching Institute Thesis Preparation and Writing Guide Appendix 15.

ACCEPTANCE AND APPROVAL PAGE

This is a page showing the acceptance of the thesis by the jury and approval of the relevant institute director Appendix 16A and 16B.. The sample MS word files of these documents can be accessible from a documents link on institute web page.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

This is an acknowledgment page containing the expression of "thanks" to the person or organisations that help studentAppendix 17.

ABSTRACT:A brief introduction showing the results achieved by responding 'What, Why, and How' questions. Here, you should avoid giving irrelevant details; only give problem constitute the core of the thesis research, for what purpose this problem is selected, which method or methods have been applied, results and coclusions. The abstractshould create a presentationfor readers at the first evaluation. Besides it should constitute the main material for literature review. Hence, 'short summary' should be carefully prepared. Abstracts should not exceed one page and300 words. By considering the abstract may be included in anyof indextittle of the study, the full name of student who prepared the thesis, the name of the university and institute, department name, program (MSc/PhD), date, and tittle and full name of the advisor should be included in abstract page. 'Keywords' (3-5 words) representing the subject should be written in bold under the abstract. Because the thesis abstracts uploaded to the scannable area of Database in YÖK (The Higher Education Council) documentation center italic fonts, tables, figures, graphs, chemical or mathematical formulas, symbols, upper or lower symbol (subscript, superscript), Greek letters, non-standard symbols or characters should not be used.A sample Abstracts is provided in Appendix 18A.

ÖZET: Özet is the Turkish translation of the abstract. A sample Özet is provided in Appendix 18B

TABLE OF CONTENTS

The table of contents must list the title of each chapter and its parts and sections, references or bibliography, appendices, and vita. The wording used for all entries in the table of contents must match exactly with what is used in the text. Each entry must have leader dots which connect it to its corresponding page number. The heading TABLE OF CONTENTS appears without punctuation, centered between the text margins, 3.5 cm from the top of the page. The listing of actual contents begins at the left margin at least three spaces below the heading. A sample table of contents is provided in Appendix 20

LIST OF SYMBOLS AND/OR ABBREVIATIONS:Contains a description of abbreviations and symbols in the thesis

LIST OF TABLES:This is a list of tables in the thesis indicating number, caption and page that contains the table.

LIST OF FIGURES : This is a list of Figures in the thesis indicating number, caption and page that contains the figure.

TEXT:Text constitutes the main body of the thesis divided into three sections including introduction, main part and results.These sections can be divided into subsections.This seperation can be modified according to the Institute and the Department.Direct and indirect quotations made by depending on the chosen reference system, formulas, visual objects and if required quatations are given in the text. Technical information on how to display them in text is described under the headings of "FORMAT" and "VIEW".

INTRODUCTION:This is the section of the thesis explaining aim, importance and methods of the study.

CHAPTER 1,GENERAL INFORMATION:This section describes the basic information related to thesis topic and the work done previously. Status of the thesis is demonstrated with respect to these previous studies. This section can be divided into sub-headings depending on the nature of science or thesis topic.

CHAPTER 2, MATERIALS AND METHODS. This section describes the methods and techniques used in this study with their application methods.

CHABTER 3, RESULTS:This section includes the data obtained in the study.

CHABTER 4, DISCUSSION - CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS.In this section of the thesis, findings are interpreted as general in the light of literature .Moreover, truth value and importance of the study are discussed in a logical manner. Recommendations related to the results If any recommendations related to the results, they should be given in this chapter.

REFERENCES: This subsection must be included in each thesis, cited references are displayed according to the selected citation system Appendix 3.Allreferences cited are given in square bracketsin order of mention in the text.The mentions in the text for two or more authors are indicated as “et al.”.

APPENDIX

If present, scale drawings should be added to the end of the thesis.

CURRICULUM VITAE: CV is prepared according to the example shown inAppendix19.

II. FORMAT AND APPEARANCE

Every thesis which will carry the name of Erciyes University must meet the same high standards of presentation in terms of all pertinent physical properties, including format as well as paper and print quality. The following guidelines are related to the format and appearance of the thesis that you are going to prepare.

PAPER:All copies of the thesis must be on good quality one-sided white bond paper, of at least 75 g, measuring 210 by 297 mm (A4) to insure durability, permanency, and opacity.

PAGE LAYOUT

The top edge, the left side, bottom and right edges of the page should be 3.5, 4, 2 and 2 cm, respectively.Titles should not overflow the marginsAppendix1.On the page with the main chapter headings7 cm from the top edge of space should be left. Page number should not be on this page.

PAGE NUMBERING:The page number is added to the top right of the page.All page numbers must be in the same font and point size. For the preliminary pages related to the format (from the front page to the introduction), use small Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv, etc.). Use Arabic numerals beginning with "1" on the first page of the text (including introduction) and continue throughout the rest of the thesis, including bibliography, appendices, and vita. All pages must be numbered consecutively, including pages containing illustrations, tables, figures, plates, and photographs.Pages containing the main chapter headings join the numbering; but the number is not written on the page.

TEXT FEATURES (FONT SIZE AND TYPEFACE): Font, preferably Times New Roman, font size should be 12 points.When using one of the other standard fontsrecommended letter size must be selected (Verdana 10 punto; Arial 10 punto; Bookman 11 punto ve Palatino 12 punto).The selected font and size should be used throughout the thesis.Main headings should be large 2 points.Main headings and sub-headings is written in bold.Text 1.5 line spacing, figure captions and descriptions of the table is written as single-spaced. 1.5 line spacing is left between the head and the previous paragraph and 1line spacing between the head and next paragraph.Please use singlespacing after all punctuation.For spelling and punctuation, the most current editorial Guidelines ofEnglish Language shall prevail.

PARAGRAPH: You can start by giving a written text in the paragraph indent or may be initiated at the beginning of the line.How to start a paragraph is decided by considering the selected referring system.Indentation are added or nottext is written with 1.5 line spacing. If the indentation given, text continues without spaces between paragraphs with 1.5 line spacing. If indentation is not given, 1 line spacing is left between paragraphs.In an academic study a paragraph is essentially a collection of sentences which all relate to one central topic. Considering a large theme,theme continues on more than one paragraph;it should be established links among paragraphsand flow of the ideas must be maintained until the theme completed. One-sentence paragraph is not appropriate. The length of the paragraph should be considered to be in a balanced manner andit should be avoided consecutive long and short paragraphs.

CITATIONS / REFERENCE SYSTEM:Various reference systems are used to show the source for citations in academic work.. For Erciyes University Graduate school of Natural and Applied Science students can show citations as in the following example.

  1. Wang et al. [170] found that the frequency of the cry9 gene is 15%.
  2. Some other researchers also reported that cry gene frequency and profile show difference among Bt collections [169, 172].
  3. Bt strains carry one or more plasmidsand the genes encoding the Cry proteins usually present in these plasmids [176].

CITATIONS:Scientific research is carried out by utilizing knowledge. As a requirement of science ethic, if the scientific knowledge, data, ideas and comments provided by other researchers is used in the thesis, reference should be made to the author's work.These ethical principles, not just for same citations; researcher also applies to data transmitted with its own style and expression. The direct or indirect quotations showing without direct or indirect source is called plagiarism.Person in this situation would have acted contrary to scientific ethics.Specifying source means to specify the contribution of the author.Also translated from a foreign language without knowledge of the resources are also included in this scope. Acquiring knowledge on scientific ethics is also an important requirement for graduate students.

INSERTION OF VISUAL OBJECT:Visual objects (tables, figures, photographs) are placed in the text as centered page. In this case, 2 lines space is left on top and bottom between the visual objects and text (including comments). Description of the visual object (figure and table headings) should not be exceeded the width of the object and arranged to center the line.Visual objects should not also exceed the block of text. The visual objects that are larger than a full page is placed in successive separate pages.Tables and figures (photographs are considered as images) can also be numbered consecutively within each chapter.Table title centered on top of the table not to exceed the width of the table. Likewise, figure captions are placed under the figures as centered. Description of the figures and tables are written as single-spaced. Photos in all copies of the thesis should be as close to the original in qualityAppendix6Aand Appendix6B.

THESIS LENGTH: Master’sand doctoral thesis (excluding appendices and references)must be at least 30 and 60 pages, respectively.

MULTIPLE VOLUMES:If a finished manuscript exceeds 5 cm in thickness it must be bound in two or more volumes, each limited to 5 cm in thickness, too. All volumes must be numbered consecutively, using capital Roman numerals. Each additional volume must contain a title page. Title pages should be identical except for the notation Volume I, Volume II, etc., just below the title to differentiate the volumes.Both the Roman and the Arabic numbering systems used in Volume I, should also continue throughVolume II. For example, the first volume came to an end in 512 pages, the first page of the text portion of the second volume begins with 513. Each volume must contain a complete Table of Contents.

BINDING: Master's and doctoral theses should be bound with white chrome cardboard. The cover of the thesis should be written with black letter. The imprint of the thesis (dissertation title, author, thesis type, year) on the back of the skinshould be written readable form as in Appedndix-7and8
