Pair dictation

First teacher models the activity by being one part of the pair while the class isthe other. Then the students practice.

  1. Make a list of 10 sentences that you have worked on in class.
  2. Divide the students into pairs or groups of three
  3. Give one person 5 sentences (words) the other person the other 5.
  4. Each pair has one AlphaSmart
  5. Pairs dictate to each other and use different files to store dictions. Upload to laptop and print out and bring next day for whole class feedback.

Sentence Creation

  1. Students are in small groups and look through previously studiedmaterials and pick 10 words.
  2. They write these words in file 1.
  3. Students pass the alpha smart to another group and write sentences foreach word in file 2.
  4. The AlphaSmarts are passed from group to group. Each group uses adifferent file until each group has written sentences for the words on eachAlphaSmart.
  5. Files are printed out for a whole class activity.

Level 1, Orientation Mid City Center ALPHA SMART COMPUTERS

Topic: Personal Identification, integrating the Alpha Smart Word Processorsinto the curriculum. All language about personal identification is learnedprior to using the Alpha Smarts.

Prior to Day 1 be sure Alpha Smart computers are charged and the filescleared.

Day 1: Approximately 1 hour

Objective: Students will become familiar with the Alpha Smart computerkeyboard by practicing on a paper handout. They will learn some basic keyson the computer: Enter, space, number and letter keys.

Present the handout of the AS keyboard. Learn vocabulary for on/off,keyboard and type. Model on the overhead how to peck the letters using theindex finger. Model how to quickly touch and release when typing a letter soas not to type multiple entries.

  • I dictate, “Type A, type B, type C, etc.” while students typed on theirhandouts.
  • Introduce vocabulary for ENTER and modeled typing my first name, ENTER,last name, ENTER.
  • I dictate, “Type your first name, ENTER, type your last name, ENTER,etc.” while students typed on their handouts.
  • Introduce vocabulary for SPACE and model typing my address using spaces.
  • I present verbally while pecking on the overhead: “4957 SPACECoronado SPACE Ave SPACE Apt. #3”
  • I put some addresses on the board and ask students where theSPACES go. We put little dots where the spaces go.
  • Students write own addresses on a paper and put dots where thespaces go.
  • Students type their addresses on the handout.

Day 2: Approximately 1 hour

Objective: Students will use the Alpha Smart computers to answerquestions about personal identification. They will practice using basic keyson the computer: Enter, space, number and letter keys.

  • Have students clear desk completely except for the keyboard handout.
  • Review vocabulary from previous day. Have absent students work with apartner who was present for coaching while reviewing. Distribute AlphaSmart computers, students practice a previously learned dialog to receivetheir computer, “Can I borrow a computer?”, “Yes,” “Thank you.” Pass out apaper with questions that students are to answer. Create threequestionnaires for three levels of students.

Model asking the questions, typing the answers on the overhead and enteringafter each answer. Instruct students to answer their questions on theircomputers and not use pencils. Circulate during activity answering questionsand problem solving. Show those students who ask or seem ready how tomake a capital letter or backspace to delete a mistake.

Day 3: Objective: Students will become more proficient using space, enter,capital letters and backspace by copying information provided by theteacher.

Review previously learned material on the handout. Distribute the computersand review. Inform students of objective. Distribute handout to be copied.

Subsequent Days: After this I’ll begin using the computers in pairs or groupsand integrate other language activities.
