DCM Mission Statement:

DCM exists to make disciples of every people group in partnership with the Churches and other agencies by demonstrating God’s love and bringing hope to the City.

Doing all within a loving framework!

DCM History:

DCM was started in 1989 initially working with churches, children and the elderly. In 1995 a debt advice service, "Jubilee", and a food "Basics" bank, was established, the first in the country. Jubilee clinics are run by trained advisers at different venues, and have assisted many people when at their most vulnerable. DCM acquired premises in 1996, and started a project to assist deprived children at Christmas. Other projects were initiated with schools and street outreach. In 2009, Street Pastors were launched to help people partying in Derby on Friday and Saturday nights, and an outreach to street homeless people was started with food and companionship. In 2011, DCM moved to its current premises and, in 2015, it took out a lease on an industrial unit to house the Basics bank and provide a logistics base for the Derby Churches Night-shelter, which was started in 2013, in response to the city council's cuts in funding for hostel beds. DCM works in partnership with local and national agencies.

DCM Core Values:

Loving

Love is fundamental to the Christian faith. We believe God is love. It is because God loves all humankind that He sent His son to pay the price for sin by dying in our place. Without an attitude of love we can do nothing of lasting value. We demonstrate love through compassion to the needy, respectfor individuals, treating all people with equality, generosity, humility in service, being customer-focussed, patient, kind, open and honest in all we do.

Investing

This value brings together our replication of Jesus’ unique persistence in investing time, practical, emotional and spiritual effort into the impoverished (both the “needy” impoverished and the apparently better off but spiritually poor). Our investment includes a commitment to learning, willingness to risk, aspiration to excellence, quality of service, innovation, and celebration of success.

Freeing

Jesus announced His mission as a fulfilment of God’s plan for the release of captives. Carrying on His mission, we not only free people struggling with life, to be who He intends them to be, but also free our volunteers to give in ministries God has called them to. We free Churchesandorganisations to be their best in partnership with us. We also free up possibilities for the statutory and Government authorities, reaching where they struggle to reach and providing solutions that aim towards sustainable, thriving outcomes.

Empowering

Jesus promises to all life in all its abundance. We design our ministries to enable progression in life, rather than to create a dependency culture. Our experience is that individuals can and do overcome addiction, relationship difficulties and issues which blight their lives or restrict their potential and come to develop the ability to make healthy choices. We aim to accompany them on their walk from captivity to freedom, and ultimately freedom in Christ.

Derby City Mission is a member of the Evangelical Alliance and we hold to their statement of faith.

WE BELIEVE IN...

The one true God who lives eternally in three persons—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

The love, grace and sovereignty of God in creating, sustaining, ruling, redeeming and judging the world.

The divine inspiration and supreme authority of the Old and New Testament Scriptures, which are the written Word of God—fully trustworthy for faith and conduct.

The dignity of all people, made male and female in God's image to love, be holy and care for creation, yet corrupted by sin, which incurs divine wrath and judgement.

The incarnation of God’s eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ—born of the virgin Mary; truly divine and truly human, yet without sin.

The atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross: dying in our place, paying the price of sin and defeating evil, so reconciling us with God.

The bodily resurrection of Christ, the first fruits of our resurrection; his ascension to the Father, and his reign and mediation as the only Saviour of the world.

The justification of sinners solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ.

The ministry of God the Holy Spirit, who leads us to repentance, unites us with Christ through new birth, empowers our discipleship and enables our witness.

The Church, the body of Christ both local and universal, the priesthood of all believers—given life by the Spirit and endowed with the Spirit's gifts to worship God and proclaim the gospel, promoting justice and love.

The personal and visible return of Jesus Christ to fulfil the purposes of God, who will raise all people to judgement, bring eternal life to the redeemed and eternal condemnation to the lost, and establish a new heaven and new earth.

Executive summary

  1. Relief of Poverty and Restoration

The principle object of Derby City Mission (DCM) is the relief of need among the citizens of Derby, based on Christian principles, through offering debt advice, advocacy and assistance to achieve community cohesion.

The intention is to fully integrate our Emergency and Prevention work under Relief of Poverty, bringing people through a clear pathway. The model will identify touchpoints for positive action to prevent and resolve homelessness and issues surrounding homelessness from ‘early identification’, through ‘prevention’ from ‘crisis’ to ‘positive interdependence’

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy” Proverbs 31:8-9

The Relief of Poverty Department (ROP) currently overarches three of our projects working with the homeless (Derby Churches Nightshelter), those with chaotic lifestyles (Recovery Lunch) and in needing support with benefits or in financial difficulty (Jubilee Project).

Derby Churches Nightshelter began in 2013 in response to severe cuts in Council funding for homeless provision. The Nightshelter operates each winter from 1 December to 31 March, providing a hot meal and a warm, safe place to sleep for up to 35 people in 7 church venues on a rolling basis. Alongside the Nightshelter we run Guest Support, through which we support guests who want to engage and find a solution to help them move out to homelessness, be that housing, drug/alcohol rehabilitation, employment or returning to their home town or country.

Each Wednesday we provide a lunch of cake and sandwiches, and soup in the winter months, for around 50 people who are street homeless, many of whom struggle with addictions and have chaotic lifestyles.

The Jubilee Project offers free debt advice at walk-in, no appointment clinics held at various locations across the city. Food parcels are also available to those in particular financial needs. Each clinic works with a local church and volunteers from that church or other churches and supports clients in a variety of ways. Central to each clinic is the work of the local church and its own expression of the 5 marks of mission.

The post of Senior Poverty Relief Missionary is a new 2 year fixed term position in the Relief of Poverty Department. The Senior Poverty Relief Missionary will be working closely with the Head of Relief of Poverty and the Debt & Welfare Benefit Missionary to build on existing support and develop Derby City Mission’s Homeless Prevention Programme in the city.
