Heckmondwike Grammar School
Further Particulars for the Position of Teacher of Art & Design
Full-time
(0.8 fte may be considered for the right candidate)
The Art & Designdepartment currently consists of two full-time staff and one part-time member of staff. The work of the department is supported by technicians shared with Design Technology. An ability to offer a second subject within Design and Technology up to Key Stage 3 may be seen as an advantage.
We are looking for a well-qualified and enthusiastic graduate to join our art team to assist us in growing and diversifying our provision. The post will provide a unique opportunity to work within a selective, mixed, 11 to 18 school with a large sixth-form.
We would like to appoint an enthusiastic, outstanding Art Teacher who shares our belief in the highest standards of academic achievement in a Grammar school setting. The department typically achieves 100% A*-C at GCSE with most grades being B or higher and 70% A*-B grades at A-Level. The department is always looking at ways of developing its curriculum offer and so the ability to offer an additional specialism such as photography, textiles or ceramics up toexamination level would be an advantage but is not essential. For us commitment, attitude, ideas, potential and enthusiasm are important qualities.
In Key Stage 3 students are timetabled for three hours of art over a two-week timetable period. Classes tend to have two one hour lessons in one of the weeks and one lesson in the other. Students in this key stage currently follow a broad curriculum with emphasis on fine art and textiles practice, reflecting the specialisms of the current department staff.
At Key Stage 4 the subject becomes optional, typically generating two groups of students in both years 10 and 11. The AQA GCSE specification is followed with students building up their ‘portfolio unit’ over the course of year 10 and the first term of year 11. The spring term of year 11 is spent on the Externally Set Assignment. The successful candidate would be expected to be able to contribute to the teaching of this course.
In the sixth form, students again follow the AQA A-Level Specification, which builds on the ground covered at GCSE. A suitably qualified candidate could have the responsibility for contributing some teaching and expertise to the teaching of this course.
The Art department currently has three teaching rooms. Two of these are adjacent to each other and connect, whilst the third is a short walk away. The rooms are generally well-equipped, with large tables facilitating work on a variety of scales.
Art is a popular lunchtime activity for students and at least one of the rooms is open at lunchtime. A willingness to support the extra-curricular commitments of the department would be a desirable quality in the successful candidate.
More detail about the school and the department can be found on the school website at Application forms and a supporting letter should be returned by the closing date of noon on Friday 27th February 2015 to:
