April 2006

Dear Parents:

Spring is here and it is time to start thinking about plans for the 2006-07 school year. April is the month when we accept requests from parents for placement of their child for the next school year. Class placement for our students is one of the most important decisions that we make. Therefore we do put thought and our experience into the decisions. We do consider your requests as a part of our decision-making. Our placement meetings begin in May so April is the timeframe to make your requests. The request for a certain teacher must be in writing and state educational reasons. Most of next year’s teacher and grade assignments will be the same as this year, but because of the increasing number of students in some grade levels, some changes will need to be made. Requests need to be in writing and brought to the MRE office.

MRE Writing Contest:

In the month of March, we held our annual Writing contest. We have found that by having a school-wide focus on the importance of good writing, we can improve our student’s success in their daily writing skills. A representative from each class submitted their written story and those were scored by a team of our staff members. The following students’ work was considered: Tommy Stewart, Reyanna Blank, Aryel Arritola, Zachary Olsen, Joshua Idiart, SteenRasmussen, Austin Molloy, Jamie McCoy, Halie Walker, Tallen Mitchell, Katie Niedermeyer, Shonda Yother, Derek Holloway, Adilene Tellez, Rylee McGrath, Cassidy Layton, Marcus Kinney, Will Meade, Lauren Chancellor. All did a wonderful job with Tommy Stewart receiving the highest score. Congratulations to you all !

Chess Club:

Chess Club is over for another year. This year there were 60 students who participated. Thirty-two of them entered the annual tournament and for the first time, players from all grades advanced into the final stages of the tournament. The championship match was between Luke Parent and Tyler Davis. After a classic struggle, Luke emerged as this year’s champion.

4th/5th Chorus Program changed to May 4

Kindergarten Roundup:

May 16 at 6:00-7:00 pm will be the MRE Kindergarten Round-up. This will be a great time to learn about the Kindergarten schedule, curriculum and register your child for next year’s MRE Kindergarten class. The birth date requirement in the State of Oregon is the child must be 5 years of age on or by September 1 to enroll in public Kindergarten. Please bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate and immunizations to the Round-up. We look forward to meeting you and your child !

Spelling Bee:

The annual MRE Spelling Bee was held March 21 with eleven 4th and 5th graders participating. Chante Doshier, Tallen Mitchell, Blake DeVries, Brittany Snyder, Daniela Carrillo, John Martinez, McKenna Drake, Hannah Graunke, Reyanna Blank, Rayna Gasik and Aaron Reed participated in the double elimination Bee. The words were extremely challenging and these students represented their school admirably. Hannah Graunke was the winning speller and will be representing MRE at the District Spelling Bee at Patrick Elementary on April 14. We wish her well !

Marble Season is Coming !

May is Marble Season here at MRE and we take our marble playing seriously! Students are allowed to bring their marbles to school beginning May 1. Please assist your child in getting the marbles secured in a container to prevent spillage on the bus or in the classroom.

Science Fair:

Plans are underway for the MRE Science Fair scheduled for Thurs., May 11.

Students can pick up their Science Fair entry forms from the office beginning April 10 and return the completed form to their teachers. They will then receive a packet to begin their project. There will be a help session during a.m. recess on April 13 if students want some assistance deciding on a project. The projects can come to school on May 11 and the fair will be held at 6:00-7:00p.m. in the gym that evening.
