SECTION 1. GENERAL COMMENTS
For previous reports and additional information on the PSMFC Smolt Monitoring Program at John Day and Bonneville Dams, see our web site at http://www.fpc.org/bon_jda/index.html.
A. FLOWS
Mean river flow was 112.2 kcfs and peaked at 136.0 kcfs on 31 August. Average water temperature was 69.20 F; a 0.8% decrease from last week and 0.50 F lower than this week in 2001. Spill at John Day Dam averaged 31 kcfs for 31 August and 1 September, but has been discontinued for the remainder of the season.
B. FISH NUMBERS
A total of 799 smolt were sampled this week, generating a collection estimate of 7,758. The sample consisted of 99.5% subyearling chinook.
C. FISH CONDITION
Total descaling (>20%) for subyearling chinook was 2%, which is 1% higher than the season to date rate of 1%. The total percent mortality for subyearling chinook sampled was 0.4%, higher than the season to date rate of 0.2%. For the 793 subyearling chinook sampled for detailed condition data, partial descaling (3-19%) increased from 8.5% to 10.6% this week. Body injuries increased from 0.7% to 1.3%, non-avian predation marks (mostly teeth or mouth scars) increased from 2.3% to 2.4%, and observations of hemorrhaging (mostly in the fins) increased from 2.1% to 2.6%. Incidence of other injuries or conditions was negligible.
D. MARK RECAPTURES
No external tags or brands were observed this week. PIT tag detections increased from 137,287 last week to 137,349 this week, see page 3 for details.
E. INCIDENTAL CATCH
The incidental catch for this week consisted of 119,990 juvenile American shad, 31 sculpin, 22 juvenile Pacific lamprey (all silvers), 10 walleye, eight adult Pacific lamprey, seven suckers, three adult American shad, three bluegill, two mountain whitefish, two bullhead, two crappie, one chinook jack, and one chinook mini-jack.
F. FACILITY INSPECTIONS AND OPERATIONS
The Primary Dewatering Structure (PDS) screen cleaners have been running in auto approximately every two hours. Debris at the separator and in the sample tank has been low throughout the week and consists mostly of aquatic macrophytes and sticks. There have also been several dead adult American shad observed at the separator bars this week. See the CoE weekly report for more details.
G. RESEARCH
A total of 20 juvenile Pacific lamprey were held for USGS-BRD researchers this week.
