Purpose: This protocol is used to explore the dilemmas of people in the group. Each person has the opportunity to share their problem, receive solution feedback, and help others solve their dilemmas.
Steps:
- Everyone writes down their dilemma, the focus question they want to pose to the group, and what they have tried to do to solve their problem so far.
- Form groups of 3. Identify who will present first. Each group member will have a job:
- Presenter: presents his/her dilemma
- Facilitator: keeps the group on task
- Notetaker: takes notes
- The PLC leader keeps time.
- The first presenter gives an overview of the issue, problem or dilemma and then poses a focus question (2 minutes).
- The facilitator and the notetaker ask clarifying questions which are aimed to help them understand the question and the context (2 minutes).
- The facilitator and the notetaker ask the presenter probing questions which are primarily for the presenter. They ask the presenter “why” among other things. These questions should be worded so that they help the presenter clarify and expand her thinking about the issue or question she has raised for the group. The goal here is for the presenter to learn more about the question she framed or to do some analysis of the issue she presented. The presenter responds to the group’s questions, but there is no discussion by the larger group of the presenter’s responses yet (2 minutes).
- The facilitator and the notetaker act as if the dilemma is their own and brainstorm what their approach would be to this challenge. Presenter just listens and takes notes. Facilitator should make sure that each individual stays true to his/her role. (4 minutes)
- The presenter moves back into the group and responds to the discussion. During this time, the group remains silent (2 minutes).
- Roles rotate until everyone has had the opportunity to present their challenge.
