LESSON PLAN_Kevin Morton

Using voting technology in Literacy with Year 9

Subject: / Class / Teacher / Date / Period
Physical Education - Orienteering / 9BTEC Diploma / K. Morton / 24/06/10 / 3
Context of lesson (include prior learning) / Students are aware of Qwizdom + have experience using them. They have also carried out orienteering courses before.
Learning Objectives / Learning Outcomes
(What I’m Looking For You To Be Able To Do)
Increase understanding for how to use Qwizdom equipment effectively through a practical, competitive environment.
Develop Numeracy skills through a team-based orienteering course
Enhance the ability to work tactically against the clock and be able to evaluate own and others’ performance through verbal feedback. / All / Will understand how to use the handsets by the end of the lesson and will have increased their understanding for how they can aid the development of key academic skills, such as numeracy.
Some / Will gain further encouragement from working in a pair and will appreciate the benefit of completing tasks in a competitive situation. These will give some feedback to their partners and work hard at improving their skills during the lesson.
Few / Will illustrate a very good understanding for the use of Qwizdom and will complete tasks with high levels of success. These will compete at pace whilst developing their numeracy skills. They will also be able to support others’ throughout by giving excellent feedback.

Assessment/Assessment for Learning

Students will have the opportunity to assess their own performance throughout the lesson as they will observe the teacher station during the orienteering course. They can make judgements as they progress and look to improve their understanding as a result. We can also send the ‘right/wrong’ signal to their handsets to aid in their development. This is instant AfL.
Resources:Qwizdom Handsets, clues sheets
Learning Episodes
Starter: Q&A on how to be successful when taking part in orienteering. Students had time to discuss ideas and evaluate appropriate practices/strategies prior to starting. They were also asked to consider reinforcing how to use the handsets.
Main Activities
Students set off in pairs, locating different stations by using the cryptic clues sheet. Having located the station they are to answer all Numeracy questions by using the handsets.
They must stay together as a pair and can therefore only answer one question at a time.
The students’ progress will be indicated on the laptop at the meeting (start) position.
Some students can be used to support others on the way around. This may be the case if one pair finishes early too. The teacher can track each pair’s progress and offer support, or ask other students to offer support if needed. / Plenaries
There is the opportunity for pupils to discuss ideas during the lesson. They will return several times whilst on the course in order to input data. This will allow them to question ideas and for me to question them also.

Homework

To create 10 questions of their own that could be used in a further orienteering course at a later stage. These must also focus on Numeracy.

Additional Information / Special Focus

The focus for this lesson was on the development of Numeracy skills in a PE/practical manner. This would aid the motivation of the pupils and inspire them to work on their Numeracy competence.
SEN Information – Adequate differentiation would allow support to highlighted students. This may be in the form of pairings and adapted clues sheets. Additionally, the questions have been set at the correct targeted level, appropriate for the students involved.
G and T students leading the groups – There are a number of students from this class who are G&T in PE and other academic subjects. It is important that the PE and Maths G&T students are utilised, again through effective differentiation and specific questioning.
Deployment of TAs
None required
Literacy / Numeracy
Indication of Key words through Q&A and discussion work.
Evaluation of work completed during and at the end of the course. This is through the form of Q&A as well as feedback from other students. / The entire lesson focus is concerned with Numeracy development. The questions on the course are numeracy-based, set by the AST in Maths.
