**Important Definition**

“Discuss”: The term discuss, which appears often in essay questions, directs you to examine, analyze carefully, and present considerations pro and con regarding the problems or items involved. This type of question calls for a complete and entailed answer

Historical Context: Following the end of World War II the United States and the Soviet Union became engaged in a lengthy and costly conflict known as the Cold War. Though the United States and the Soviet Union never fought directly against one another, they continually competed to spread the influence of their respective political ideologies. This competition for influence did result in a number of localized conflicts, sometimes referred to as cold war “hot spots”.

Task: Using information from the documents (Skill portion of the exam) and your knowledge of world history to answer the question below.

Prompt: Discuss which region, Europe or Asia, was most affected by the superpower rivalry for control and influence during the Cold War.
  • Be sure to support your argument with specific examples of Cold War interventions in your chosen region.

You should organize and write an essay in which you identify which region was most affected by the Cold War. Use the writer’s checklist below and the accompanying persuasive writing rubric to help you write your response.
