Class of 2015 Teen Leadership Corps

Cradles to Crayons provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play. We supply these items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need.

About the Teen Leadership Corps:

The Teen Leadership Corps is a unique group of students looking to develop or improve organizational and leadership skills while working to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children. As one of the Greater Philadelphia region’s leading volunteer organizations, it is central to our mission to provide a venue for people of all ages to give back to their communities. For students, we do this by offering a unique leadership experience through the Teen Leadership Corps. As Cradles to Crayons looks to increase its capacity, the Teen Leadership Corps will be integral to assisting the organization in meeting its needs for volunteers and children’s goods.

Program and Requirements:

The Teen Leadership Corps is an opportunity for students to learn leadership skills through hands-on volunteer projects, and then put those skills into practice by engaging their communities in product collections and by raising awareness about the need for and work of Cradles to Crayons.

*Because this is a leadership program, we insist that the student (not the parent) initiate contact with regards to their application and their place within the program.

Once selected, each member of the Teen Leadership Corps is required to:

·  Attend 2 summer training sessions.

·  Work 15 two-hour shifts* (a total of 30 hours) fromAugust 2015 to December 2015 at The Giving Factory, leading groups in hands-on volunteer projects such as sorting clothes, cleaning shoes, or filling orders for KidPacks - packages of everyday essential for children in need.

·  Complete one product drive. There will be time to discuss this event during summer training.

Additional Requirements:

·  Lead a group of volunteers at our Backpack-A-Thon event to be held in early August (week day date TBD).

·  Lead a group of volunteers at our Un-Gala event in December (date TBD)

Volunteer shifts available:

·  Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

·  Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

·  Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

·  Fridays from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

·  Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Selection Process:

Following the application process, applicants should expect to receive a phone call from Tyla Conicello, Cradles to Crayons’ Training and Volunteer Programs Coordinator, to schedule an in-person interview which should last approximately 30 minutes. Members will be selected based on their application and in-person interview. Spots for this program are limited. Accepted applicants will be notified by Monday, June 1, 2015.

Class of 2015 Training Sessions:

Students selected for this program will be required to attend two training sessions, held both in the beginning and middle of the summer. During orientation, TLC members will learn about the mission and model of Cradles to Crayons, how to become well versed in how to conduct a community product collection, and how Cradles to Crayons helps the tens of thousands of disadvantaged children in our community every year.

Additionally, TLCs will hear from a Cradles to Crayons’ social service agency partner, and gain an understanding of how poverty affects children and families around the Greater Philadelphia region.

The session dates for training are:

Session 1: Monday, June 23rd and Tuesday, June 24th.

Students will learn the mission and model of Cradles to Crayons, as well as be well versed in how to conduct a community product collection.

*Following this training session, the students will have one month to conduct a product collection in their own community with a focus on one of our most needed items. During that month, the students will have weekly online "assignments" as a means of checking in with our staff.

Session 2: July 21st and 22nd -or- July 28th and July 29th.

Students will learn how to run two of our primary sections in the warehouse.

*Following this training session, the students MUST work 15 shifts (totaling in 30 hours) between the period of August 1 and December 23. Participation in our two signature events (Backpack-A-Thon and Un-Gala-dates TBD) will be required and count towards 3 of the total 15 shifts.

*Students MUST attend Training Session #1 and one of the provided dates for Training Session #2 in order to participate in the 2015 TLC program*

The Class of 2015Teen Leadership Corps members will also take part in a Joint TLC and Family Volunteer Session on Saturday, September 26th from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
We invite all TLCs and their families to our warehouse for a morning of volunteering, as the new Teen Leadership Corps members offer their families an insight into how they will spend their time at Cradles to Crayons.
