A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of James O. Day.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to James O. Day, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.

WHEREAS, James O. Day was delivered by his grandfather, Dr. Harley Bruce Northcutt, in a log cabin on Tar Ridge on May 15, 1929, a native of Mariba, Menifee County, Kentucky, and he traversed these earthly bounds on Veterans Day, November 11, 2003; with the respect due him, he received full military honors and was laid to rest in America's most hallowed burial ground, Arlington National Cemetery; and

WHEREAS, James O. Day was the devoted husband of Dorothy Day; he was the proud father of two sons, James H. Day of Herndon, Virginia, and Robert D. Day of Annapolis, Maryland; and two daughters, Elizabeth Day of Gaithersville, Maryland, and Carolyn Howe of Franklin, Tennessee; he was a loving sibling to two sisters, Virginia Day Powell and Eula Klenk, both of Frenchburg, Kentucky; and a brother, George E. Day of Alexandria, Virginia; and he also leaves behind six beautiful grandchildren and several nieces and nephews; and

WHEREAS, James O. Day was a graduate of Menifee County High School and the first from Menifee County to attend and graduate from the prestigious United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, where he first learned and continued to live without fail by the motto of "duty, honor, country"; he received a master of arts in political theory and government from the University of Maryland; and

WHEREAS, Colonel James O. Day served his country with honor and distinction and was considered a patriot by all who knew him; in 1952, he was commissioned a second lieutenant of field artillery in the United States Army; he continued to serve for 22 years, rising to the rank of colonel, retiring in 1974; he valiantly answered "the call to the guns" fighting in both the Korean and Vietnam wars; and

WHEREAS, Colonel James O. Day was a highly decorated soldier receiving the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, and other service ribbons from various tours; and

WHEREAS, James O. Day was an esteemed member and involved citizen in every community in which he lived; he was a loyal member of the Democratic Party, and he represented the 7th District of Kentucky as a delegate to the 1980 Democratic National Convention; he was a member of Masonic Lodge #656, Maytown, Kentucky, for over 40 years; while living in Texas, he was a long time member of Alta Mesa Church of Christ, and he served as commander of the American Legion Post, Paris, Texas; and

WHEREAS, James O. Day was a gifted fiddler who shared his musical talent with family and friends as often as possible; while a cadet at West Point, he was often called upon by his fellow classmates to give them a tune; his passion for music led him to serve as president of the Texas Old Time Fiddlers Association for six years; and

WHEREAS, the passing of James O. Day has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of James O. Day and extends to his family and many friends its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of James O. Day.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mrs. Dorothy Day, 10124 Stoneleigh Drive, Benbrook, Texas 76126.
