BHS PHYSICAL EDUCATION SYLLABUS-Aerobics & Dance

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Hi, my name is Mr. Brett Goodwin. I am looking forward to having your daughter/son in class and will do my best to help her/him succeed here at Benton High School. Below I have listed my expectations for the class, please take the time to discuss the information with your child. Although I am going over this information in class, discussing it with your child will be a meaningful way to increase understanding. The purpose of Physical Education class is to help students develop the habit of choosing to regularly participate in physical activity as part of a health-enhancing personal fitness plan. Physical activity can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. This elective course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle now and in the future through participation in a variety of aerobic exercise and dance activities. Students enrolled in this course will participate in the following: Step aerobics, Floor aerobics, Martial Arts, Line dance, Social dance, Folk dance, Novelty dance, Pilates, Yoga, Stability ball workouts, Aerobic fitness development exercises, and Walking/Hiking programs. Water aerobics is optional.

Expectations & Rules:

Each student will be given a lock and a locker to keep their belongings in. Showers are available but are optional. The school dress code will be enforced in class. Students are expected to wear shorts/sweats, t-shirt/sweatshirt, socks and tennis shoes. I do not make students change, if they wear the appropriate PE attire to school they can wear it for class and not have to change.

Participation:

Everyone is expected to participate in class, the only exceptions that will be made are for notes from the nurse or a doctor. If you do have a note from a doctor, please bring it into the office and they will see to it I get a copy of it. Points may be taken away from students for disrupting class, cursing, disrespect and not properly taking care of equipment. Each day, students receive 10 points for participation and

10 points for dressing out. Five points will be awarded each day for discussions on health articles that are read aloud in class. Students will do a research project, fitness log sheets, worksheets, quizzes and assignments throughout the semester.

Absences:

If a student misses school and it is excused, they will be allowed to make up what they missed but students must ask myself to see what they missed. If is an activity they missed they may bring in a health article (internet, newspaper, magazine, etc) and write a brief summary of what they read.
