CS 321 Human-Computer Interaction
Fall 2006
This exercise will be done in your discussion groups.
Step 1: Interpretation Session
A national car rental company whose headquarters are in Illinois has hired your HCI consulting firm to design a interactive system to help their web developers deal effectively with managing multiple projects at once.
The system should:
- Help them keep track of the current state of each project
- Support communication between the web developers and the interaction developers
- Support communication between the web developers and the content providers
- To get beta-testing feedback, record issues, and track bug fixes
- To schedule live release dates
What to do
Each group will run an interpretation session based on the field notes collected from the in-class interview with Endoscope Rental employee, U1.
- Assign group members to the team roles:
- Interviewer – person who reads their field notes out loud
- Modelers – team members who draw models while Interviewer reads notes
- Participants – team members who contribute to the models, ask questions, and make notes about design ideas
- Moderator – person who makes sure everyone has an opportunity to contribute
- Rat hole watcher – person who makes sure that the session stays on topic
- Your team will develop a flow and a sequence model.
Step 2: Brainstorming Session
Using your work models from your interpretation session your design team will brainstorm a design idea for the store.
What to do
- Take a little time for the group to shout out ideas without any judgment of their merit.
- List each idea.Remember that the new system should fit the needs and the way the users think about the tasks they are doing, as well as improving the way things get accomplished.
- Consider the pros and cons of each idea and choose one or some combination of one that maximizes the positive ideas.Note: cost of implementing the system is not a consideration at this point.
- Using that one idea work out the details. Have one person draw the details in a design vision (see below) while other participants suggest the idea details.
What to hand-in
- A list of team members present.
- Your work models with your team member’s names on each model
- Each member’s field notes from the interview assignment
- The team’s brainstorm design idea.
