ChildProtectionGardaVettingProcess

Please note that all candidates who wish to do the “old syllabus” associate, proficiency and licentiate music or drama exams are now required to attend the Griffith College Child Protection module. On completion of this session candidates will have their Garda Vetting forms processed through the LSMD and submitted to the Garda Vetting office. Candidates must complete this as a requirement to graduate.

Completion of this course is already compulsory in the QQI Higher Diploma in Arts in Drama and Music Educationprogrammes.

Following the successful launch of the LSMD online exams, we would like to welcome Tom Morley and his students to the LSMD. Tom’s students are the first in the world to join us for the Traditional Irish music exams online. They have completed the LSMD exams from their venues in the USA and we look forward to future groups of new LSMD students joining us from there.

TheLeinsterSchoolofMusicDrama(LSMD)atGriffithCollegehaveannouncedthelaunchofTheSheilaMurphyMusicandDramaScholarshipAwardsinmemoryofformerdirectoroftheschool,MissSheilaMurphy.

OriginallyfromMitchelstown,Co.Cork,SheilawasacherishedmemberoftheteamattheLSMDandwasappointedtothepositionofdirectorinthe80s.Verymuchtheessenceofthemusicanddramaschool,thenumberofstudentsincreasedfrom3,000to15,000inover300centresnationwideunderherexcellentguidance.

TomarktheanniversaryofSheila’spassing,thescholarshipservestopaytributetothecontributionSheilamadetotheSchoolandherloveformusicanddramawhichspannedoverfivedecades.

Head of FacultyofTheLeinsterSchoolofMusicDrama,KarenCaseysaid,“SheilawasaninspirationtothethousandsofstudentswhopassedthroughthedoorsofTheLeinsterSchoolofMusicDrama. SheissorelymissedbutIthinkshewouldbehappytoknowthathernamewillgoontohelpandinspirefuturemusicanddramastudentsandteachersinIreland.”

Speech & Drama & Music Workshops

SPEECH & DRAMA

The Speech & Drama workshop will consist of three different elements. There will be a Mime workshop with Sharon O’Doherty, a workshop on Movement with Sinead O’Connor and the third element will be with Suzanne Binley who will cover sample pieces from the LSMD syllabus as well as a feature on Oral Communication for the Junior Cert exams. This will be an opportunity for everyone to share material. All three of these will take place in the one day workshop here in Griffith College on the 14th October 2017.

PIANO

Catriona Grimes will cover three areas that the examiners recommended at the recent LSMD examiners meeting. They would like the area of Performance Anxietycovered, they also requested that Sight Reading Tips and Choosing Repertoire for the senior recital and grade 6-8 exams all be covered. Catriona will cover all of these topics in the one day workshop here in the college on the 14th October 2017.

Music and Maths Leaving Cert revision

Following on from the very successful Leaving cert revision Maths and Music courses, we’ll be hosting more during April 2017 for Leaving Cert students. Maths revision will take place in Griffith College Cork, Dublin and Limerick, with Dr Tomás Mac Éochagáin. The Music revision day will take place in Griffith College Dublin with Katie Ryan. These classes are free to all Leaving cert students; there will be further information and registration details on the Griffith College website nearer the time.

  • ExcellenceAwards–FollowingonfromsuccessoftheLSMDspecialCentenaryCompetitionandlastyear’sawards(pleaseseethewinnerslistedatthebackofthisbooklet)wearedelightedtoannouncethatweplantocontinuetoholdTheLeinsterSchoolofMusicDramaExcellenceAwardsagainthisyear. HerewewillaskExaminerstohighlightastudentthattheyfeelshowsexcellenceinperformingmusicpiecesorspeechdramapieces. Wewillaskthemtoputforwardstudentsforthisaward–thesestudentsarenotnecessarily“medalwinners”orstudentswhoattain95%orhigher…thesearegoingtobestudentswhoexcelinperformingaparticularfieldofSpeechDramaorMusicorSinging. Thesestudentswillbeinvitedtotakepartin“call-backs”forfinalistsandwinners.
  • Examinerswillgotothecentresandexamineintheusualway. Whiletheretheywillmakenoteofanyspecialcandidatethattheyfeelhasexcelledincertainfield–forexamplebestpieceofmusicplayed,bestdramapieceandasoneExaminersuggested“bestpoetryspeaking”–asthiswouldencourageandimprovetheartofpoetryspeaking.
  • StudentswhoarenominatedfortheExcellenceAwardswillbeaskedtosubmitavideolinkoftheirperformance,ideolinkshouldbeemailedwithalinktoyoutubeordropboxandshouldbeintheformatofonevideolinkfile.Theseemailswillbeviewedbythejudges;studentswillalso have the option to attend the call-backs rounds here in the LSMD.

SpeechDramaTeachersofIreland(formallyIDAC)

This is a professional body run by a voluntary board, representing Teachers of Speech, Drama and Communication. We provide support to teachers and students through publications, events, materials and forums to meet other teachers, a teacher referral service along with a mentoring service for young students and new teachers. We promote speech and drama activities in Ireland and provide a facility for members to stay in touch with other members. This is done through our Workshops /Personal Development Days and Annual Drama Festival.

You will also info links to Speech and Drama Feiseanna held around the country as well as the Examination Boards. Whether you are a new teacher looking to start off or a more established teacher looking for something new, there is always something fresh and interesting there for everyone.

Membership is open to holders of Licentiates, Associates Diplomas and Hdip from all recognised Speech and Drama examining bodies and costs €50 a year. Student/retired teachers membership €25.   • AnyschoolorteacherpresentingatleastTWENTYcandidatesforexaminationinanyonesubjectmaysecurealocalcentreforthatsubject.
  • ThosepresentingfewerthanTWENTYcandidatesmayobtainacentrebypayingtheequivalenttothefeesoftwentycandidates.Alternativelyyoumaysendthecandidatestothenearestexistingcentre,providingthatthisisconvenientforthatcentres’teacher.
  • Theschoolorteacherfixesfeesontheassumptionthatthevenueforexaminationwillbeprovided.
  • Ifthroughillnessacandidateisunabletoattendtheexaminationattheappointedtime,re-entrywillbeallowedforthesamegradeonpaymentofatransferfeeof€5.00,orforahighergradeonpaymentofthedifferenceoffees,(plusatransferfeeof€5.00). Candidateswhohavebeenincontactwithaninfectiousillnessmustnotbepresentedforexaminationunlesstheyareoutofquarantine.
  • Thecandidate’sentrycardswithdatesandhoursofexaminationswillbeforwardedtoeachcentre,withinoneweekoftheexamination.
  • Theresultsofexaminationswillbeforwardedassoonaspossible. Responsibilityisnotacceptedforlossofreportcardsafterdespatchbypost.Wherereportcardshavebeenlostthetotalmarksobtained,butnotthedetails,willbesuppliedonapplication.
  • Headsofschoolsorcentresarerequestedtoensurethattheexaminationroomisclean,warmandwelllit, with a table and chair in the venue for the exams.Noise levels outside the exam room should be kept to a minimum.
  • Teacherspresentingstudentswithspecialneedsshouldcontacttheofficeforadviceregardingexaminations.
  • Pleasenotethatanycandidateswishingtocancel/postponetheirolddiplomaexamwithinfourweeksofthediplomaexamdateinDecemberandJunesittingswillincura€100cancellationfee.
Followingonfromarecentexaminersmeetingpleasenotethefollowingrecommendations–
  • Speech & Drama
  • A reminder to teachers that “Pause in prose” is one of the theory requirements for grade 5 exam in the syllabus.
  • Also that there can be a room hire charge and if you have students joining another centre please ask the host teacher in case there is a room hire charge that you/your students would be required to pay.
  • Examiners said that they usually hold their own exams on a teaching day i.e. as part of the term; this negates the need for additional room hire charge for their own exams.
  • Teachers should not start students (with no background in speech & drama) at the high grades (for example grade 6/7) please contact the LSMD for guidance on the recommended grade/starting age.
  • Grade 2 prose pieces are too long, 10-12 lines maximum will be heard during the exam (the piece of prose does not need to be 2 minutes in length)
  • Examiners recommend that there be a variety in the poetry and in the own choices pieces being presented by the students at an exam centre.
  • Mime sheet, examiners recommend that a mime sheet be prepared by the students in advance of the exam and for this to be handed to the examiner at the exam listing; the title of the mime and basic movements that will be done for the mime.
  • Some additional sample mimes are; Buying a new hat, The Magician and Walking the dog.
  • Special Needs
  • Examiners request that teachers consult with the LSMD examiner in advance of the exam regarding any students that may have Special Needs or Learning Difficulties. Examiners also noted that the Effective Communication exam can be a more suitable format as there is less heavy learning for this exam.

Piano

  • The issue of ill prepared students was discussed, the music examiners discussed several occasions in which they had encountered students who had only been introduced to scales a week or two prior to the examination. This should not be the learning process.

Previous recommendations from the examiners include;

  • Examinerswouldliketotalktoteachersaboutthetimetableetc.priortoexams,sowhentheteacherreceivestheexamdetails fromustheycancontactthe examinersoyoucanco-ordinatethetimetable,e.g.ifyouhavegivenstudentstimes–thisistoensurethatweallruntothesametimetableandhopefullyexamtimeswillnotrunbehindandwewillkeepdelaystoaminimum.
  • Examinershavesuggestedthattheircontactdetailsbesentdirectlytoteacherssothattheteachercanalsocontactthemdirectlytodiscusstheexamtimetableandbreaksetc.WewillendeavourtoincludethisinwiththeReportCardscoverletter(iftheexaminerhasbeenconfirmedatthatstage)or elsetheexaminerwillcontacttheteacherwhentheyhavebeenconfirmedfortheexams.
  • Whencandidatesarevisitinganothercentreforexamsitisrequestedthatthecandidatearrivesfullypreparedandthecandidatesteachershouldbeinattendancetoliaisewiththe“hostteacher”ifrequired. Teachersareadvisedthattheremaybeacostinvolved(especiallyofthehostteacherishiringtheroombythehour)andifthevisitingteacher’sstudentsaredoinghighgrades. Visitingteachersareaskedtocheckthiswiththehostteacherwhenconfirmingtheexamtimewiththehostteacher.
  • Teachers are advised to use a variety of pieces when preparing students for exams
  • Standards need to be upheld, especially with the senior grades/ senior students. Examiners have advised that if a candidate does not reach the required standard during the exam, then the examiner will recommend “a referral” for that candidate and they will be advised on the Report Card that they did not reach the required standard as set out in the LSMD syllabus and they will advise the student to re take the exam on another date.
  • Senior students should know the words, they are reminded that it is not a “memory test” that they need technique.
