SCOPE OF WORK
NONYEVU ACCESS ROAD
The proposed Nonyevu access road falls within ward 6 of Port St. john’s municipality. There is currently no formal road to the beneficiary village of Nonyevu. The number of people to benefit directly from the proposed infrastructure is 1200 living in 220 households.
Current access to the beneficiary village of Nonyevu is a problem especially when it has rained due to steepness. The existing informal road is in deplorable state and a proper new road with approved material needs to be done. The terrain in the area is hilly and this makes it difficult for motorists to drive to the area as there is formal road. The people within this community cannot easily access public institutions such as clinics/ health center in Town, schools or the nearest business centres in Port St. Johns by vehicles because of the condition of the road.
It is imperative therefore the road be constructed as a matter of urgency
The length of the road requiring construction is approximately 8.6km. The following will have to be done in order to construct the road:
1. Design of the road
2. Tendering to source a contractor
3. Construction
The construction scope of work includes ripping and compaction existing insitu material to form the road bed/ subgrade.
Cut to fill (if the cut material is desirable) or spoil
Imported recommended and tested gravel to obtain specified wearing course.
Dealing with storm water channels and culverts
400m Concrete slab on steep areas
BUTHO ACCESS ROAD
The proposed Butho access road is in ward 3 of Port St. Johns Local Municipality. The road once constructed is expected to directly benefit three villages of Butho and Mbenengeni. The total number of households to benefit is 306 with a population of 1836 people.
The total kilometres of road to be constructed is approximately 11km of which 3km is existing and 8km is new. Currently the existing 3km is in deplorable condition and impassable. Access to clinics, schools and business centres is a problem currently as the community has to walk long distances to access taxis.
The terrain like the rest of Port St. Johns area is mountainous and this makes construction of roads in this municipality generally expensive. Massive Earthworks need to be done to bring the final road running surface to acceptable grades.
The project scope of works involve survey, design, tender and construction. The construction scope of work includes ripping and compaction existing insitu material to form the road bed/ subgrade.
