The Wayne Family

A study centering on the history and lineage of the Wayne family(s) of Missouri in the 1800s.

Hypothesis:

It is my belief that my Fraternal line can trace a path back to 1431, Derbyshire, England. There are several places along the way that are not documented, questionable and/or missing. Through detective work, educated guesses and extrapolation, the evidence is real compelling that it is correct,

just short of being eligible for membership in DAR/SAR and being able to claim/register a coat of arms in English Heraldry.

I know from my grandfather, that his folks came from Missouri and this is where I start my search. I knew very little family history, for reasons that still remain mostly unknown to me, my line became estranged from the rest since my g grandfather. Prior to the Civil War, the only Waynes in Missouri were three families in an area known as "Little Dixie". One in Callaway Co. (my line), one in Audrian Co. and one in Boone Co. They seem to be related, how has been guess work, but these families and related families in Illinois and Wisconsin produced many, many, many children, of which I am in contact with a few over the internet. From here, the line traces through Kentucky, then Virginia, then back to Pennsylvania.

There exits an official Wayne tree (Edwin Jaquett Seller’s book "English Ancestry Of The Wayne Family of Pennsylvania", 1927) tracing the lineage from Colonial America back to 15th Century England. There are several holes and questionable spots in this tree. The main challenge is trying to link the line from Virginia and later, with the line from Pennsylvania and before. That's what this paper (in part) tries to accomplish. Another purpose is to bring these lines back together.

Assumption 1:

In censuses and other documentation, "Wayne" appears in many forms. I will assume that because of mechanical typos or illiteracy "Waine", "Wain" etc. are phonetic spellings and they all represent "Wayne", E.g.:

- John WAYNE (1810 Washington Co. KY Census) should be the same as John WAIN (1820 Washington Co. KY Census), the ages from 1810 to 1820 seem to correspond (noting that John C. Waine is probably the son of John).

- Benjamin WAIN (1810 Montgomery Co. KY Census) is more than likely the same as Benjamin WAYNE (1820 Montgomery Co. KY Census).

- John W. WAINE (1820 Bourbon Co. KY Census) is probably a brother-in-law to Judith WAYNE (1810 Bourbon Co. KY Census) and John WAINE (1810 Montgomery Co. KY Census) is probably the father of Benjamin and John W. Other documentation points to this.

- There is a John M. Wain (1823/24/25 Callaway Co. Tax list) and a Thomas Wain (1823/24/25 Franklin Co. tax list). I believe that John is the John from Bourbon County and Thomas is the younger son of Judith as indicated in the 1810/1820 KY Censuses (a 16-18 year old is listed). Thomas disappears at this point. The "M" is a typo (should be a "W").

- I think it clear that the "John W" in the 1830 (Wayne), 1840 (Wain) & 1850 (Wayne) Missouri censuses are the same. It doesn't make sense to have the same "John W" appear in the same place in 1830 & 1850 and be replaced by another "John W" in 1840, just because the surname is spelled different.

- In Virginia and Kentucky, there is a family(s), named Whayne. This is the only place they are found. The story goes that to distinguish the Wayne family in Campbell Co. and the one in King&Queen Co., one family changed the spelling. It's not clear which one was which?

- There is another Wayne family that appears in West Virginia, that doesn't seem to be linked to my line, some of them believe that their name was changed from MacElwain. The link may occur back in Ireland?

Assumption 2:

I assume that the ages and numbers of offspring are correct in the censuses. I found it difficult to be accurate pulling from the correct columns when trying to count off of the microfilm for the earlier Censuses, but they do seem to add up (there are exceptions). I believe I have accounted for all the children. There were also cases were daughters and their husbands and families also lived in the same household.

Assumption 3:

I'll claim that the data I do have is complete enough to make my assertions. I find new information all the time that clarifies a lot of relationships, and yet hasn't changed the overall hypothesis.

Assumption 4:

There was initially only one Wayne family in Colonial America (there are situations where people had changed their name to Wayne). The majority of Wayne families today should be able to trace their lineage back to one of the six surviving sons of Capt. Anthony Wayne (Francis, Gabriel, Isaac, Humphrey, Jacob & John. William dying before giving issue). As a rule of thumb, each son settled in a different part of the new nation. I.e. Francis' line appears to have settled in Virginia; Gabriel's in South Carolina/Georgia; Isaac's male line died out; Humphrey's in Georgia; Jacob's and John's in Pennsylviania/New Jersey/New York. This isn't completely proven and there are exceptions. Many Black and Indian families took (or were given) the Wayne name and they too should be included. Even John Wayne (Marion Michael Morrison) was named after "Mad" Anthony Wayne and shares our heritage through adoption (so to speak).

[04] This report is broken up into sections, each section covering one decade. Within each section, different items are numbered, i.e. “[##]”. When I reference a particular piece of data or item, I’ll list it as such: [1820.05]. This means that I am pointing out something about the fifth item under 1820.

John Wayn - Pvt 2nd NJ Regt

John - Pvt 2nd NJ Regt

John - Pvt Cumming's NJ Bttn

Jacob - Klock's Regt of NY Mil

Can’t be sure if these three John’s are the same, but these match up with names under Jacob10’s line being in NJ/NY.

Christopher - Pvt Hazen's Regt of Cont. Troops

Godfrey - Pvt Hazen's Regt of Cont. Troops

John - Pvt Hazen's Regt of Cont. Troops

Mic'l - Baldwin's Regt of Artificers in Cont. Troops

Since these are Continental troops, it’s not very helpful. John & Michael could possibly be Francis10’s sons? Need to find out the origins of Hazen’s Regt. All I’ve found out about Hazen is that it started as Hazen’s Company of Robert Rodger’s Battalion in the French and Indian War. In the 1790 PA Census for Northumberland Co. there is a Christian, is this the same as Christopher? If so then it would indicate that Hazen's Regt is from PA. Are Christopher, Godfrey & John brothers?

Anthony - Col 5th PA Regt/Brig Gen

Joseph - Pvt 1st PA Bttn

It’s clear as to who this Anthony is :-) Is this Joseph a grandson of Francis?

Benjamin - Pvt 3rd, 5th, 7th, 11th VA Regt

Charles - 7th VA Regt

Humphrey - Pvt 1st VA State Regt

Japheth - Pvt 3rd, 5th, 7th, 11th VA Regt

This seems to indicate that they are related. Probably this Humphrey is Francis10’s son. Benjamin, Charles and Japheth are brothers (from John11 or Michael11). This from the fact that family members usually fought in the same unit (until the death of the Sullivans in WWII). It also depends on when they fought. If they were Michael11’s, they could have been old enough to fight in the later years of the war. The whole brood could belong to John11? Is Japheth actually Joseph?

WHAYNE, Elizabeth -b c 1780 King & Queen Co, VA USA

WHAYNE, Isaac - b c 1780 King & Queen Co, VA USA

WHAYNE, William 1750 King & Queen Co VA USA From:

William WHAYNE is first mentioned in a history of King & Queen County as being elected a Deacon of the Baptist Church in King & Queen Co. It is before the Revolutionary War..I think 1750. William Whayne's wife was probably Sarah. Sarah Whayne is mentioned in the court records of Jefferson Co, KY. Their son Isaac Whayne disappeared from the King & Queen tax rolls before the death of William. The year, c1809, William disappeared from the tax rolls, Isaac came back to King & Queen Co VA for a very short stay. Some of William's land went to Simeon Simcoe. Simeon married William's daughter Elizabeth in about 1803. Both Isaac and Elizabeth moved to Jefferson Co, KY. Simeon died shortly after arriving. On the day Simeon's will was probated in 1813, Priscilla Jeffries chose Isaac Whayne as her guardian. Priscilla later married Walker Pruitt of King & Queen Co. They stayed close to Elizabeth and her children. Isaac moved on to Davies Co, KY.

In the court record of Lousiville there is reference that Elizabeth received 1/3 of the money collected from the VA estate and sent to them by Mr Thomas Jeffries. I believe this indicates that William had two surviving children and a Spouse, Sarah.

When Walker Pruitt died he left inheritance to, his wife, to his sister in K & Q Co. and to a Brother in the mid west. Priscilla Pruitt left inheritance to the three Simcoe Children that were Elizabeth's children, second marriage for Simeon.

Family Tradition says there is a relationship to Mad Anthony WAYNE. I can find no evidence that this is true. I think there may be a relationship with the Jeffries and perhaps the Pruitts.

His son (Isaac), his daughter (Elizabeth Whayne Simcoe) and a Sarah Whayne were in Jefferson Co, KY before 1813.

In 1819 he removed to Boone county. His children were-William, Jefferson, Washington, Madison, Harrison, Jackson, Perry, Elizabeth, Malinda, and Paulina. Jefferson, Washington, and Jackson married and settled in Callaway county, the two latter in 1836, and the former in 1831. [02] CALLAWAY COUNTY 353

"MARTIN.-George Martin, of Virginia, married Elizabeth Russell, and they had a son named Russell, who was a soldier of the revolutionary war. He married Peggy Vaughn, a daughter of Cornelius Vaughn, of Caroline county, Va., and settled first in Kentucky, from whence he removed to Callaway county in 1826. His children were-Nancy V., Lucy D., Fanny, John T., William, and Samuel P. Nancy V. married Matthew McGill. Lucy D. married James M. Lawrence, who settled in Callaway county in 1824. Fanny married Henry Vaughter, of Kentucky. John T. married Lucy Wayne. William married Peggy Wright, and settled in Callaway county in 1824. He was married the second time to the widow of James Davis. He founded Martinsburg, in Audrain county. Samuel P. was married first to Judith D. Wright, and settled in Callaway county in 1824. He was married the second time to the widow Sally Turner. Mr. Martin is an Old School Baptist, and a State's rights Democrat of the purest water. In early days he was a great wolf hunter. On a certain occasion he went into a wolfs den, killed the old ones, and brought out eight young ones alive. He paid his taxes for two years with the scalps of the latter. On another occasion he attacked a gang of nine large wolves that had followed a neighbor of his, an old man, several miles, trying to kill and devour him and his horse. Mr. Martin killed three out of the nine with a club, while sitting on his horse.
