CITY OF TECUMSEHEVENT GUIDELINES

If you are considering hosting or advertising an event located in the City of Tecumseh, approval may be required by the City of Tecumseh and the State of Michigan. The events that require special approval include street closures for parades or other activities on public streets, temporary signage, events that take place on property owned or operated by the City of Tecumseh (with the exception of locations rented by the Tecumseh Parks and Recreation), and banners displayed over M-50 (near Pearl St).

Note: For events that take place in a City owned park, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department directly at 517-423-5602.

  1. Street Closure Request (parade, block party, other)

A street closure in the City of Tecumseh requires approval by the Tecumseh City Council. The City Council meets on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, you should complete and submit all required paperwork at least 30-days prior to the event to assure timely approval. The attached event applicationand section #1 with a fee of $25 will be required and covers the cost of barricading.

Note: For safety, barricades are required. The petitioner may also be required to pay for any costs associated with any special labor associated to the protection of public safety (i.e. Police Department, Department of Public Works, etc). The City will notify you of any additional costs up front and may require a prepayment and/or deposit. You may be required to provide liability insurance naming the City of Tecumseh as “additional insured”.

  1. M-50/Chicago Blvd. Banner Display

If you would like a banner displayed over M-50, you must submit the attached event applicationand section#2. The instructions for approval are attached to this document. The city will need to obtain approval from the State of Michigan; you should first determine if the date(s) you desire are available. Then submit your application at least 30 days in advance. Banners are very popular and the location is typically booked up many months in advance.

  1. Temporary Signage

Temporary signs are required for events that don’t require any special approval by City Council or the Planning Commission. Temporary signs may be used for events that are not located on city property but wish to advertise a special occasion orsale. One sign is allowed but may not exceed16 sq. ft.(maximum 6ft tall)and must not exceed 90 calendar days. A $10 fee will apply to EACH occurrence (fill out the attached event applicationand section #3).

  1. Special Event

A special event is an organized or typically publicized gathering of people on city property or city streets. These types of events are sponsored by non-profit groups, churches, fraternal organizations, nonprofit organizations, or service clubs where persons are permitted to sell goods, wares or merchandise, or are permitted to accept donations at a location not customarily used in such a manner.

These events require approval by the City and can take as much as two weeks for approval. The applicant must complete the attached event application and section #4, and submit the $10 application fee. Once the application is submitted and reviewed, we will notify you of any additional requirements which may include liability insurance, security deposits, security services, etc. These will be determined after review of your application. Most events that take place at a city park do not require this permit but must be organized through the Parks and Recreation Department.

Note:

  • Your event may include one or more of the above items, which will then require completion of all application sections, payment of all fees, as well as approval of each item.
  • You should not market or advertise your event prior to receiving our approval, therefore, scheduling and submitting your application early is highly suggested.
