Learning Outcomes

Basic 2 is an integrated skills class. In this class you will learn listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. You will have class with the same teacher every day for about four hours. In this class, you will learn the sounds of the English language and the different letters and groups of letters that represent these sounds. You will use what you know about the sounds of English to read and write words and sentences and to improve your spelling of English words.

In this class you will learn:

  1. to say and read numbers over 100
  2. to say, read, and write addresses
  3. to hear the difference between short and long vowel sounds
  4. to say long vowel sounds
  5. to use the 5 Phonetic Skills to know if a vowel makes the short or long sound
  6. to use the 2 Decoding Skills to read long words
  7. to use nouns, verbs, and adjectives
  1. to write three kinds of sentences:

subject + be + adjective (I am tall./He is not tall.)

subject + be + place (The kitchen is next to the living room.)

there + be + noun + place (There is a book on the table./There are books on the table.)

  1. to copy words, phrases, and sentences quickly onto notebook paper using good handwriting
  2. to answer information questions (who, what, when, where, why)
  3. to read, understand and spell new words (vocabulary)
  4. to read and spell common words (ex: because, ever, never, also, these)
  5. to ask and answer questions with Is there/Are there
  6. to read stories aloud
  7. to read and understand materials used in daily life (ex: receipts, menus, schedules, medicine bottles, store ads)

Attendance

Absences:You need to come to class every day.

Your teacher takes attendance every day at the beginning of class.

If you are not in class, your teacher will mark you asAbsent.

If you are sick, stay home or go to a doctor, but you are still Absent.

There are NO EXCUSED ABSENCES.

Lateness:If you come to class after attendance, your teacher will mark you asLate.

If you are 15 minutes late, your teacher will mark you asAbsent.

Three Late marks is the same as one Absent mark:

Late + Late + Late = Absent

Breaks:You need to be in the classroom for all of the class.

There are NO BREAKS. Take a break before class or after class.

If you need to use the bathroom, leave quietly and return quickly.

You should not leave class often or leave class for a long time.

If you do, your teacher may mark you Late or Absent.

Tests:If you are absent during a test or a quiz, your grade will be 55%.

There are NO MAKE-UP TESTS.

GradesYou will receive grades for your work in class. Your teacher will use this grading scale:

Grading Scale:

Excellent / Very Good / Good / Bad / Very Bad
89–88 = B+ / 79–78 = C+ / 69–68 = D+
100–93 = A / 87–83 = B / 77–73 = C / 67–63 = D / 59–0 = F
92–90 = A- / 82–80 = B- / 72–70 = C- / 62–60 = D-

Final Average:

At the end of the session, you will receive a final grade. Your teacher will average the grades together in this way:

Tests / 60%
Quizzes / 20%
Final Exams / 20%

Effort Score:You will also receive a score for effort. This will be a number:

1 = Exemplary Effort
2 = Satisfactory Effort
3 = Unsatisfactory Effort

A student with exemplary effort:

Comes to class every day and is never late.

Speaks only in English.

Does all homework and takes all tests on time.

Pays attention and participates in class.

Asks questions.

Does not leave the room during class time.

Does not use a cell phone in class.

PromotionWhen you finish this class, you may be promoted to Level I.

To go to Level I, you MUST have a total final grade average of
A, B, or C. The total average of your grades must be 73%–100%.

RetentionIf you do not pass Basic 2, ELI will retain you. You will not go to Level I. You will have to take Basic 2 again.

Other Rules

You must do all the work for this class by yourself. Other people must not do your work. Do not cheat on tests and exams. (
