TH 304 and 404 Jr. and Sr. Year Production Team Seminar

Course Description:

TH 304 (3 Units)

Intemediate practice in theatre design and technology with emphasis on production collaboration and portfolio building. Prerequisites: TH 126, TH 127 and two of the following - TH 202, TH 204 or TH 263; or instructor's approval.

TH 404 (3 Units)

Advanced practice in theatre design and technology with emphasis on production collaboration and portfolio building. Prerequisite: TH 304 or instructor's approval

This course will explore, through theoretical classroom assignments, the collaborative process and will require students to work in production groups of a set, lighting, and costume designer in the development and presentation of designs for a variety of assignments throughout the semester. Students enrolled in this class must have taken all the required basic design and technology courses and should have the ability to produce all necessary presentation materials including scenic drafting and models, rendered lighting storyboards, paperwork, and light plot, and swatched costume renderings, with all accompanying paperwork.

Course Objectives:

The Student will…

1: Explore the collaborative process through a variety of group projects

2: Develop drafting, drawing, and model making skills in either scenic, lighting, or costume design

3: Develop conceptualization and design skills in either scenic, lighting, or costume design

4: Develop their ability to research and discuss ideas in the formative stages of a design project

5: Develop their ability to present and defend their creative ideas.

6: Develop their portfolio

Course Policies

Attendance:

Attendance is mandatory. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class and if you are late it is your responsibility to see the professor at the end of class. Arrival 10 minutes after the start time is considered an absence, as is an early exit from class. The NAU Theatre Attendance Policy as copied below will be strictly enforced:

Every student enrolled in a Department of Theatre course will be allowed three (3) "sick days" of unexcused absences. Beyond this limit of three absences, the student's final grade will be lowered one letter grade for every unexcused absence. Emergencies, deaths in the family or severe illness must be accompanied by proper documentation in order to be excused. Arriving late to class will be considered an absence. Students must provide an institutional form to the professor for Official University event absences. Students with nine (9) absences MWF will be administratively dropped with an "F."

Participation:

Students are expected to fully participate in all class exercises, presentations and discussions. Positive and enthusiastic participation is expected and is a factor in the final course grade.

Assignments and Assessment:

Students are expected to have all reading done on the day listed in the course schedule. All assignments must reflect the best effort of a college student. They must be prepared in the manner outlined, handed in on time (as listed in the course schedule), and complete. Any incomplete work will be docked half the value of the assignment and then graded. No work will be accepted late.

Learning Environment: Please turn off cell phones, beepers, watches, and any other electronic device that might interfere with learning. Student conduct that disrupts the learning process shall not be tolerated and may lead to disciplinary action and/or removal from the class. Academic Dishonesty: It is expected that each student shall be responsible for his/her own work. Penalty for an act of cheating or fabrication or plagiarism could range from no credit on the assignment to failure of the course to expulsion from the University. Student with Disabilities or Special Needs: Upon identification to the instructor and the university, students with disabilities or special needs will be offered reasonable accommodations for learning and evaluation. Such students are encouraged to see the instructor as early in the semester as possible.
