Topic
Each student will prepare a paper on a selected aspect of a topic covered in the course outline. The following suggestions are offered for your guidance. You are free to choose your own topic within the scope of this course. Papers not about Ancient Empires will receive a zero grade. Please consult with me to make sure that your chosen topic is appropriate for this assignment.
The following suggested topics are wide in scope; therefore, focus your investigation on one aspect. For example, if you’re interested in astronomy, check out the Mayan calendar or the orientation of the pyramids at Giza. If Egyptian or Inca mummies fascinate you, research them. Please feel free to consult me about acceptable topics, scope of research, or sources of information.

Your paper must discuss some aspect of the cultural history of the eight civilizations in this course. You may consider related topics, but please ask me first. Papers not about Ancient Empires will receive a 0 grade.
Format
Papers should be 2000 words, +/- 200 words, word processed. Papers outside the stated limits will be penalized.
Your list of references must include at least three good sources, at least one of them in print. Be careful when using Internet sources; some are not authoritative. Cite your sources thoroughly in the text of your report. Uncited papers will have grades reduced for plagiarism. Include a Table of Contents, List of Illustrations, descriptive headings in the text, References Cited, and graphic presentations to illustrate your text where relevant.
Evaluation
Student papers will be graded for Content (10), Structure (5), Style (5), and Mechanics (5).
