Key Questions
Set up expectations and read LO for the lesson. Begin starter 5 min shading (stARTer ) of square in graduation of the darkness of the pencil (dark to light)
This links to the colour graduation later.
Begin with discussion on graffiti. Recap the power point, and the focus on banksy. Explain the medium banksy uses (paint) and the links to the carved graffiti and modern graffiti on the tower. Lead children around the tower to see the modern and older graffiti examples (paint and craving)
Discuss with children and check for understanding.
Tell children what today's lesson will be and that we will be creating a banksy style picture. This will need to be done in two stages. The first stage is the sketch that we will do today, you can use your notebooks for the drafts of this and to experiment with the different materials. This will be our background and we will be creating a tag in the classroom to go in front of our background.
Decide what you want to achieve- if it is a clean line then pencil sketch may be better, for blending charcoal, chalk or pastel but for colour the pastel or chalk. We will be creating scaled down versions of our final design.
The second phase will be in the classroom – we will create the tag to go onto our background- using www.graffiticreator.net or traditional materials.
Model example for the children, explain the need to focus on a simplified design, choose a part of the tower or surrounding- for example the stonework. Refer back to activity from starter. We going to graduate the blending in the design to give a paint effect. Explain the limited resources and need to take care with not pressing too hard so that chalks/ charcoal/ pastels break.
Transition- the children decide on material they prefer. Once they are set up, set on task.
Mini plenary show children some examples of more successful children.
Extension for children who are more successful to think about adding a humorous detail or stencil style portrait to their background.
Allow children to work on their background design in groups.
Gain attention- explain to children the importance of following directions for clear up. I will be looking for examples of people doing the tasks (pack away materials etc.)
Clear up. Have children bring their picture for me to place in flat folder for transport.
Plenary- show successful examples of children's work. Ask children how they could improve? / How do you feel about what was produced?
Could it be improved (colour)
What material will you use and why?
what do I mean by scaling down?
Assessment opportunities
Will be able to walk around round with and check for understanding. Children should demonstrate blending techniques. / Success Criteria
Children show understanding of warm/ cool colours and graduation of colour/shade.
