Historical Note
The Walkerville Mercury began publication on 19 April 1890, with S. Stephenson as proprietor. In its first issue, the following paragraph appears:
In presenting Walkerville’s first paper (The Mercury) to its inhabitants
and the county generally, perhaps it will not be considered out of place
if we here state how we propose to conduct its future. As it is firmly
intended that it shall endeavour to represent the views of the community
at large, it will be conducted as a non-political and non-sectarian
journal. Its columns will always be open to just and impartial criticisms
from all and every quarter and its tone friendly and courteous to its
contemporaries. Above and before all, as its name implies, its great aim
shall be to advocate, encourage and foster our own and local industries,
as far as in its power lies and to present to our townsmen, our neighbours
and our county generally a sound and wholesome family journal. It will
be seen that we have devoted some considerable space in our first number
in describing Walkerville’s chief industry and we propose to follow out
this plan week by week, taking each firm in rotation of their coming to
settle among us.
It is not known for certain how long the paper was published. In Inventory of Ontario Newspapers compiled by Brian Gilchrist, 1987 edition, the dates of publication are listed as “1890-1891?” The archives’ last issue is dated 11 April 1891.
