7730 CBS Firmware Compatibility and Downgradability UPDATE #2
Firmware Compatibility
This technical note supercedes previous firmware compatibility and downgradability technical notes from May 19, 2004 and October 26, 2004. In summary, firmware 3.4.1 is compatible with all Release 3.0 through 3.2 CBSs, and firmware 3.5.2 is compatible with all Release 3.4 CBSs. Firmware is not cross-compatible between Release 3.4 and Release 3.0/3.2. Other firmware/hardware combinations are supported as follows:

Note 1:A small number of Release 3.0 CBS name plate labels are known to be mis-marked with a later Release 3.2 service part number. All serial numbers less than or equal to 31-36497716 are Release 3.0 CBSs regardless of the name plate label.
Note 2:Release 3.4 range (31-36500065 and higher) overlaps the Release 3.2 range (31-36499486 and higher). Release 3.4 can be differentiated from 3.2 by the model number.
Firmware Downgradability
You can attempt to downgrade CBS firmware as you like. If a CBS does not support the new firmware (see the previous chart), the CBS will reject it and continue to operate undamaged with the original firmware. If you are downgrading with ftpdl.exe, this means ftpdl.exe will stop the firmware load and report an error. If you are downgrading with the TFTP bootload feature, this means the CBS will ignore the bootload request and report diagnostic error 12 "the new image is incompatible with the hardware." Despite the diagnostic error, the CBS will continue to function and has not been damaged.
There is an exception to the previous chart. Once a CBS is upgraded to firmware 3.2.0 or higher, you cannot downgrade below firmware 3.2.0 except by returning the CBS to the factory or by contacting NCR Level 4 support for special assistance. This is true regardless of the CBS hardware version. Note that firmware 3.2.0 does not support the TFTP bootloader feature.
