ELEMENTS (K)
Using Textbk (pg 172-173) or Planner make flashcards for the following elements(spell accurately)andtheir chemical symbols(use correct format):
hydrogen / helium / lithium / beryllium / boron / carbon / nitrogen / oxygen / fluorine / neon / sodium / magnesium / iron / nickel / cobalt/ argon / copper / tin / zinc / silver / lead / bismuth / cadmium / gold / mercury / bromine / potassium / chlorine / phosphorus / iodine / tungsten / sulfur / uranium / vanadium / yttrium / calcium / silicon / gallium / aluminum / manganese / chromium / platinum / francium / arsenic / germanium / antimony / tellurium / astatine / polonium / xenon / radium / curium / thorium / barium / strontium / plutonium / nobelium / bohrium / krypton / radon
FINDING PROTON, NEUTRON and ELECTRON COUNTS:
PROCEDURE:
(1) PROTONCOUNT Find the ATOMIC NUMBER on the Periodic Table =PROTON count
(a)(e.g.) beryllium:
Proton count = 4
(2) ELECTRONCOUNT All ELEMENTS on the Periodic Table are NEUTRAL(having the
same number of protons (+) charges as electrons (-) charges)
(a) Therefore the ATOMIC NUMBER = ELECTRON count
(b)(e.g.) beryllium:
Electron count = 4
PROCEDURE:
(3) 1st ROUND the AVERAGE ATOMIC MASS(AAM#)number [Total PROTONS +
NEUTRONS and all their ISOTOPES]of an element to the nearest WHOLE number
2nd SUBTRACT the ATOMIC NUMBER [PROTONS count]from the ROUNDED
AVERAGE ATOMIC MASS number
3rdthe DIFFERENCE is the NEUTRON COUNT for that element[Total NEUTRONS only]
(a)(e.g.) beryllium:
AVERAGE ATOMIC MASS NUMBER (AAM#) = 9.012 = 9amu(AM#)
ATOMIC NUMBER = 4proton count [9 (p+n) – 4 (p) = ? (n)]
NEUTRON COUNT = 5neutron count
