Maus I: My Father Bleeds History
A-Z Dictionary
Objective: In partners, students will create a picture dictionary for the graphic novel Maus I: My Father Bleeds History to demonstrate understanding of the story and the literary elements.
Step 1: On binder paper, split up the alphabet (write the names below):
A-M
N-Z
Step 2: For your 13 letters, you need to create complete sentences that include three details including at least one event from Maus I: My Father Bleeds History to represent your letter and the chapter the event occurs (some events might require multiple chapters). Also, indicate the type of picture that you will draw to represent your sentence. Below is an example (that you cannot use):
A is for AUSCHWITZ the death camp that Vladek and Anja were sent to after being caught by the smugglers (Chapter 6).
Picture: Auschwitz sign-Arbeit Macht Frei
Step 3: Show me your completed sentences and picture choices. I will give you 4 sheets of white paper to complete your project (two for you and two for your partner).
Step 4: Fold your 4 sheets of paper into fourths and neatly cut them in half to create a book.
Step 5: For the front cover of your book, write “Maus I: My Father Bleeds History Picture Dictionary.” Draw a picture to represent the graphic novel and color it.
Step 6: Create a table of contents that includes all letters and the word that represents the letter on the back of the cover page.
Step 7: Use your notes and create a final draft version of your picture dictionary. Below is an example (your picture will need to be in color):
A is for AUSCHWITZ the death camp that Vladek and Anja were sent to after being caught by the smugglers (Chapter 6).
Step 8: On the last page include an about the author (your name and what you did on the project). Each partner will have to do this. On the back of the “book,” add four peer reviews of your A-Z Dictionary (make them up). Put your book together using yarn and a hole puncher (I will give you the yarn, if necessary, and I will hole punch your papers).
