Overview of the Week:
In Language Arts, we will read two stories. We will enjoy the stories- Pearl’s Prize Plant (a big book) and Mr. C’s Dinner (from the anthology) as well as leveled books. As we read these stories students will work on comprehension skills with an emphasis on: making predictions based on personal knowledge and details from a story and on making inferences. In terms of phonics, we will review the short /i/ sound and practice blending with different word families (graphemic bases) that have the short/i/ sound. We will learn how to read nouns with the possessive ending ‘s. We will also look at how to read and write words with the verb endings -s, -ing, -ed. Students will practice recognizing double final consonants and their sounds.
In writing, we are continuing to talk about small moment stories. We will be zooming in on a small moment. The students will be planning their stories by completing a graphic organizer that asks them to use their senses to describe their small moment. They will also work with partners to tell their stories across pages before they begin to write their first draft. We will review some of the mechanics of writing, writing complete sentences that begin with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation.
In math, students will complete chapter 3. They willuse the strategies counton, doubles, doubles plus1, and doubles minus 1 to practice addition facts within 20. We will also solve addition problems with three addends.
In social studies, we will continue to prepare for our trip to the Cooper Mill on November 20th. We will read several stories about milling corn and wheat and how Native Americans and Pilgrims “processed” their corn by hand. We will also make comparisons for “Long Ago and Now”. This unit will also prepare the students for our Thanksgiving Feast. Our Thanksgiving Feast will be on Tuesday, November 25th.
Have a nice week!
