Third Grade Exit Expectations

*Third Grade exit expectations for entrance into Fourth Grade*

These are the skills we desire to reinforce during the summer.

Students exiting Third Grade are expected in the area of Bible to:

Identify that the Bible is divided into Old and New Testament and be able to recite the books of the New Testament/

Understand the importance of having a personal devotional time and using the tools of a concordance, footnotes, and maps

Sequence the events that occurred in the Bible from the birth of Moses to the entrance of the Israelites into the Promised Land

Recite selected Bible passages by memory

Students exiting Third Grade are expected in the area of Mathematics to:

Measure using customary units

Interpret graphs and data

Add and subtract four digit numbers

Subtract across zeros

Tell time to the minute

Count mixed money

Round to the nearest 10, 100, and dollar

Identify and write whole numbers up to 100,000

Demonstrate mastery of multiplication facts and division facts through 12’s

Mastery of 3-digit by 1-digit multiplication

Mastery of 3-digit by 1-digit division with remainders

Apply math strategies to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division word problems

Students exiting Third Grade are expected in the area of Readingto:

Identify elements of a story (character, setting, plot)

Use word analysis skills

Identify genre (fiction, non-fiction, biography)

Demonstrate comprehension skills including: predicting, summarizing, sequencing, cause and effect, main ideas and details determining word meaning from context, and recognizing problem and solution

Students exiting Third Grade are expected in the area of Language Arts/Writing Skillsto:

Write and identify complete sentences

Incorporate words form a question to formulate an answer in a complete sentence

Compose an essay including appropriate capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and mechanics

Identify parts of speech

Mastery of cursive writing

Students exiting Third Gradeare expected in the area of Social Studies Skills to:

Demonstrate mastery of location of the states of our country and the correlating capitals

Recognize mapping skills (compass rose, cardinal and intermediate directions, map key, and symbols)

Answer questions verbally and in complete sentences after readinga social studies’ text

Recognize aspects of U.S. history(Native Americans, colonization, industrialization, state of Tennessee, U.S. government and WashingtonD.C.)

Students exiting Third Grade are expected in the area of Science to:

Inquiry

Explore different scientific phenomena by using the scientific method

Identify tools needed to investigate specific questions

Life Science

Investigate, compare, and contrast structures and characteristics of plants and animals that enable them to grow, reproduce and survive

Describe how changes to an environment can be beneficial or harmful to plants or animals

Differentiate among the life cycle stages of butterfly, frog, and plant

Distinguish between characteristics that are transmitted from parents to offspring and those that are not

Earth and Space Science

Identify and compare the major components of the solar system

Classify landforms and bodies of water according to their geological features and identify them on a map

Describe how rocks can be classified according to their physical characteristics

Choose the correct tool for measuring a particular atmospheric condition

Match major cloud types with specific atmospheric conditions

Physical Science

Investigate and describe different types of mixtures and the methods used to separate mixtures

Classify materials based on their ability to conduct heat

Determine that only certain types of objects are attracted to magnets
