English 10 – Informational Research Paper

PART ONE

1,750 Words

A. Plan of Investigation, 100-150

The plan of investigation should include the subject of the investigation, which should be written as a question. This is the research question. It should also include the methods to be used in the investigation. This is asking what methods you looked at for your research. Did you interview people, watch documentaries, watch reliable YouTube clips, read articles or books? You do not need to actually cite them here.

B. Summary of Evidence, 500-600

Here you will prove that your subject has been well researched.

The summary of evidence should explain what you have found out from the sources you have used. This is where you will discuss the history of the topic as well as current trends with your topic. Include the background or any information that might be important for a person wanting to understand your topic. In this section, there should be a minimum of three quotes from the three different sources, cited properly. Any illustrations, documents, or other relevant evidence should be included in an appendix.

C. Evaluation of Sources, 250-400

There should be critical evaluation of a minimum of two important sources. You must explain the purpose of those sources and the value of the sources, as well as the weaknesses or limitations of the sources. More than two sources may be evaluated but the emphasis should be on the thorough evaluation of two sources rather than a superficial evaluation of a greater number.

D. Analysis, 500-600

Based on what you have discovered, what is the future of this topic? Where are things headed with this topic? Is there an issue to be resolved, and if so, is there a likelihood of resolution? (In other words, if there is a controversy, is there the possibility of there being a solution to the problem?) You will include three more quotes, cited properly, in this section.

E. Link to Core Democratic Value, 200-250

Which Core Democratic Value(s) does this issue relate to? Restate the CDV(s) and provide commentary on how your topic is related to the CDV.

F. Conclusion, 150-200

After this investigation, you should feel like somewhat of an expert on your topic. What do you think about the topic after your research? Do you have opinions about this topic that have changed? What have you learned after this in-depth study? Share your individual opinions here. This is the ONLY section where personal pronouns are allowed.

G. Appendix

A minimum of two appendices must be added at the end of the paper. These would include pictures, charts, graphs, illustrations, and any other visual that helped you to understand your topic. These must be included in the Works Cited page.

H. Works Cited Page

A list of sources using MLA format must be included on its own separate page. This should include a minimum of five sources, but if you looked at twenty, put them here. The number of sources you viewed, (even if they were useless for your actual paper, even if you didn’t take quote from them, and even if they turned out to be very unreliable), tells how much you investigated for your paper. This is not part of the word count.

All sources and quotes are due on May 2.
