Chestnut Ridge Middle School

Physical Education Minimum Proficiency Requirements-Grades 6, 7 and 8

Pursuant to the Graduation Standards Act (NJSA 18A: 7C-1, et.seq) successful completion of this course will require:

·  Regular attendance as mandated by Board Policy.

·  Mastery of the below listed content/objectives and achievement of the stated proficiencies.

I. Preparation: All students will dress in appropriate physical education attire. (Shorts, tee shirt, sweatpants, sweatshirt, white socks and sneakers.) Cut-off shorts, one piece outfits, “bicycle” pants, stretch pants, jeans and soft-soled shoes are NOT acceptable.

-For safety purposes, no jewelry will be permitted to be worn during class.

-Unacceptable preparation will be addressed in the following manner:

a. First time unprepared: loss of 5 points.

b. Second time unprepared: loss of 5 points.

c. Third time unprepared: loss of 5 points.

d. Fourth and/or subsequent time unprepared: loss of 10 points.

It is strongly recommended that students use their assigned combination lock and locker to secure personal belongings and school supplies during the class period.Students must return assigned lock at the end of the year or pay a fine of $5.00. The school assumes no responsibility for unlocked student possessions.

II. Adherence to Classroom Procedures and Requirements. Students will demonstrate an understanding of Physical Education procedures by demonstrating the following:

  1. Report and prepare promptly for class instruction.
  2. Respond positively to directions given by the teacher.
  3. Make a sincere effort to participate in classroom activities to the best of his or her ability. If this effort is not put forth students grade will be affected accordingly.

III. Attitude and Behavior: Students will demonstrate acceptable behavior by:

  1. Cooperation and courteous behavior toward each other and the teacher.
  2. Displaying good sportsmanship.
  3. Respect for fair play in context with the rules of the game.
  4. Following directions, self-control, self-responsibility, and manners.

IV. Course Objectives:

  1. Information: students will exhibit basic game knowledge including rules, fundamental, skills and basic strategies.
  2. Skills: students will demonstrate basic motor abilities, fundamental team and dual sports skills and an increase in physical fitness levels.
  3. Appreciation: students will appreciate the value of physical activity by achieving and maintaining physical fitness and as a means of promoting worthy use of leisure time.

V.  Grading Procedures: Preparation and participation will compromise 60% of the student’s grade. Skill testing and game play will compromise 20% of the student’s grade. Written assessments will compromise 20% of the student’s grade.

VI. Excuse from Participation:

  1. Parental: a student will be excused from participating in physical education class only if he/she presents a note signed by a parent or guardian. This note is valid for one day only.
  2. Doctors’ Note: a student will be excused from participation for an extended period of time only with a written doctor’s verification. This verification must be updated monthly with a new doctors excuse note.
