Volunteer Management in Cultural Institutions – Practical issues and hints

In-Service Training for coordinators of museum volunteer programmes

What?

How to engage volunteers? How to keep them motivated on the long term? How to represent both the institution and the volunteers?

These are general questions of volunteer coorindators. The course attemptes to look for answers – mostly based on the experiences of the trainers and also those of the participants.

The volunteer coordinators and the volunteers in the Museum of Fine Arts are ready to share their experiences in-depths with you if you are or plan to be a volunteer coordinator in a cultural institution. The Volunteer Program of the Museum of Fine Arts celebrated its 5th anniversary in 2011 and has been listed as best practice organization in the programme of many international conferences. The Volunteer Docent Programme of the Museum of Fine Arts runs guided tours since the mid 90s and the programme is still expanding.

Course methods include 60% interactive training exercises, like group works, games, role plays and more to help you learn by experience. This also means that participants are requested to play an active role and share experiences. Presentations represent 15% of the course time. Opportunity will also be given to gain your own experience on parts of the induction process and volunteer activities in order you get the deepest understanding possible – 25% of course curriculum. Materials to read and homeworks for later self-check will also be provided over the 7 days.
