Motorwave and Hong Kong University Launch Hong Kong’s Micro-wind Turbines for Urban and Rural Environments

Hong Kong, March 12, 2007 – Motorwave Limited and Hong Kong University have launched a unique micro-wind turbine technology called Motorwind, which can now be used in urban and residential environments. This product was created in Hong Kong, and is being endorsed by environmental groups. The Hong Kong Sea School and WWF will each deploy this new micro-wind turbine technology in Hong Kong in the coming months.

The unique features of these turbines differentiate them from others. They can operate with very low wind speeds, making them more efficient than conventional turbines. They are small in size and easy to install on rooftops or balconies, with very simple components. The Motorwind turbines are relatively inexpensive compared to other renewable energy technologies that are available for small scale electricity production and are safe to use.

The beauty of this technology is its simplicity and efficiency, allowing energy to be harnessed with winds as low as 2m/second. Previously, wind turbine technology has been only available in a large scale, with expensive equipment that needs to be located away from populations, or with smaller turbines that have yet to prove their effectiveness. In both cases, these machines need wind speeds of over 7m/second in order to be efficient. The average wind speed in most urban areas throughout the world is only 5m/second. The advent of this new, lightweight technology, allows wind to be harnessed within an urban environment, giving building owners and individuals an opportunity to reduce their energy costs, and therefore reduce their carbon emissions. The low cost of these units means that rural communities which may not be able to afford existing renewable energy options on the market today, can now afford to generate power themselves.

Motorwind turbines can be arranged in any array of shapes and sizes, up to thousands of square meters. They can be located where conventional turbines would not be allowed, due to height at size. Conventional wind turbines only work 20-40% of the time due to wind speed qualities, whereas the Motorwind turbines can operate 80% of the time (in both lower and higher wind speeds). The turbines make little noise and are not visually obstructive.

Motorwave is fortunate to have research assistance from Hong Kong University, and will be donating a portion of the revenue raised from the sale of Motorwind turbines to the University for further research in renewable energy technologies. Motorwave is the first Hong Kong company to have developed two patented renewable energy technologies, one for wind turbines and one for harnessing wave energy from the ocean.

Recently the Transportation and Environmental Protection Department has recently encouraged developers to use renewable energy in their designs, and now the Motorwind turbines offer a locally made product that can harness one of Hong Kong’s renewable energies – wind.

Power Output of Motorwind Turbines

Surface Area of Turbines / Wind Speed / Power Output/hr / Total Power Output (year) / Total Power Output (day) / Consumer Benefit
1m / 5m/sec / 15w / 131 kWh / 3 60 w / 7 hours of TV or 7 hrs of refrigerator
1m / 10m/sec / 125w / 1 095 kWh / 3 kWh / Up to 40% of an average household's daily electricity needs

About Motorwave Limited

Motorwave Limited has developed a series of widely applicable and cost effective renewable energy technologies ranging from wave and wind energy, to power produced from exercise equipment in gyms. The wave technology can be used to create electricity, desalinized water, and hydrogen, each of which has large global benefits when generated from wave energy. Motorwave is a Hong Kong company that was established in 2006.

“ until now renewable energy generator were too expensive and too complex to be used by end consumers .our philosophy is to make accessible in terms of price and technology to everyone any system that can improve earth citizen's life .”
