Percussion Requirements for District 12 All-District Band Auditions

2016-17 School Year (Revised October 2016)

All percussionists must audition on Snare Drum, Timpani, Mallets, and Multiple Percussion

Students will audition in four separate rooms in the order listed below. All instruments will be provided. Students may not use their own instruments. Students must provide their own copies of the prepared pieces, snare drum sticks, xylophone mallets, and timpani mallets. Other implements for the multi-percussion piece (bass drum mallets, suspended cymbal mallets, triangle beaters, etc) will be provided as necessary. **Rooms 1 & 4 are combined for a 100% Snare Drum/Multiple Percussion score.

Room 1: Snare Drum Rudiments, Rolls & Sight Reading

20% Rudiments (from memory)

Students will be asked to play rudiments selected from the list of “Original Standard 26 American Drum Rudiments.” All rudiments are to be played open-closed and will each have a 15 second time limit*.

20% Rolls

Students will be asked to play the Double Stroke Open Roll (Rudiment #1 from the Original Standard 26 American Drum Rudiments list; Rudiment #6 from the PAS 40 International Drum Rudiments list), open-closed-open, lasting a total of 30 seconds*. Students will then be asked to play a Concert Roll (Buzz Roll), pp<ff>pp, with a 15 second time limit*.


30% Sight Reading

Students will be asked to perform one or more sight-reading selections. Students will be given 30 seconds to “study” the sight-reading before being asked to play. Students are not allowed to play their instrument during the study period.

* Students will be assessed on the material performed within the time limit. Judges will cut off students who exceed the time limit.

Room 2: Timpani

20% Tuning

Students will have to tune all drums required for the prepared piece. Students will be able to take the pitch of the lowest drum from their own pitch pipe or tuning fork or from a provided vibraphone. Chromatic turners are not allowed.

20% Roll

Students will be asked to play a roll on the 26” or 29” inch drum, pp<ff>pp, lasting a total of 20 seconds.

30% Prepared Piece

30% Sight Reading

Students will be asked to perform one or more sight-reading selections. Students will be given 30 seconds to “study” the sight-reading before being asked to play. Students are not allowed to play their instrument during the study period. The sight reading will consist of the same pitches needed for the prepared piece. Retuning of the drums will not be needed.

Room 3: Mallets (to be performed on Standard 3.5 Octave Xylophone)

Please use hard rubber or hard yarn/cord mallets – NOT hard plastic xylophone mallets.

20% Major Scales (from memory)

2 octaves, starting pitch will be the lowest note of the scale on the instrument. Quarter Note=160 (tempo will be given to you), in the following pattern:

20% Chromatic Scale

3 octaves, starting on the lowest C natural on the instrument. Quarter Note=144 (tempo will be given to you). The chromatic scale should be played in a 16th note rhythm, re-attacking the top note before descending.

Room 4: Multiple Percussion

The instruments will be set up as indicated on the diagram included with the music. Students are not allowed to bring their own instruments or rearrange the order of the instruments. Two music stands will be available to facilitate reading across the set up.
