MUSIC NOTE FOR WORSHIP

Luke’s gospel calls us to lives of total transformation—a tree planted in the sea, slaves served by their master. Today’s extreme description of Christian life—lived by “worthless slaves” whose faith cannot possibly be adequate enough—is surprising in Luke. Yet here is also Luke’s promise of mercy: Christ, our lord, amazes us by serving us at table. We Americans tend to treat with suspicion words like submission and surrender, but the Gospel is unequivocal: we cannot serve two masters. Our Hymn of the Day, O Jesus, I Have Promised (ELW 810) was written by John E. Bode (1816-1874) in 1866 for the confirmation of his daughter and his two sons (so the original title was “O Jesus, WE have promised”). MUNICH is commonly attributed to Hieronymus Gradenthaler (1637-1700). It was adapted by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) for his oratorio Elijah.
