Boozhoo OOCS families, welcome to the 2017-18 school year! We are excited and happy to have your child as a student here at OOCS. Communication is very important to us. One way we use to communicate with families is this newsletter. It will be sent home twice a month, generally on Friday’s. If you miss a copy of the newsletter, you can see it online at our website.
Good school attendance is very important to us and critical to your child doing well in school. Please avoid excessive absenteeism for non-health related reasons. In the event that your child is absent from school please remember to call the school or send a note with your student the next day. If we do not hear from you it is considered an unexcused absence. Classroom News
K-1 NEWS- Ms. Jeana- It has been a great two weeks in Kindergarten and First grade. The students are getting more comfortable with the environment and with each other. The students have been opening up and are willing to share more. We have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes and knowing what the difference is. A 2D shape is flat and a 3D has another dimension to it. The students have been finding 2D and 3D shapes inside the classroom, inside the school, and outside. During the school day, the students find different 2D and 3D shapes to show me and the class and we put the different shapes into the correct shape bucket. We have been learning about the sight word “I” and when using I, we are talking about ourselves. We have been reading a lot of story books and the students are learning the different parts of a book. During science, the students were introduced to bees and where they live. The students got to see a real beehive and learned the life cycle of a bee. During our station time, the students have been exploring the different tools we will be using for math and Language Arts. The students have a great attitude about learning and they are excited to learn about new things this year. The students have a reading goal for the class. I want you to encourage your child to read 15 minutes every day, so we can reach our classroom goal for this month. I am looking forward to a great year and a great classroom.
2nd – 3rd NEWS– Ms. NikkiWe have had a great start to our school year in second and third grade. The students are working hard, having fun and learning a lot. We have started writing stories with a BOLD beginning. Our spelling words this week helped us learn the Cat and Kite rule for c and k. Ask your child about this rule for spelling c and k words. In reading we have learned to check for understanding, choose just right books and we have practiced reading independently. Our math work has involved learning to use our math materials like money, clocks, and counters. We have also started an addition and subtraction math facts program to help us learn our math facts and have FACT POWER!
For our social studies project we have made a hopes and dreams shooting star and established class rules. The students created these rules for our class:
- Stay in control of yourself and participate.
- Be kind to others.
- Respect materials with kindness.
We have started using computer programs to help with our learning too. In your child's folder today you will find information on how to access our online programs at home, information on our addition and subtraction fact program, andan overview page about me and our classroom
4th – 6th NEWS – Ms. BridgetIn the last two weeks, students in the 4-6 grade have been working on their “Hopes and Dreams” for this school year as well as creating their classroom rules. It’s important that they create their own rules for their class, and have the chance to make choices so that they can take ownership of their learning. They have also been working on the factors in multiplication and determining the difference between prime and composite numbers. In the next month or so, they will be working on their autobiography. So, please be looking for the parent letter in their take home folders that will tell you about the project.
Cultural Home/ School Liaison – Bonita Poitra
Parent Advisory Committee
We are reaching out for volunteers. There are many ways you can volunteer your time or talent for our students. You can be on the Parent Committee (they meet only 4 times a year!), you can share any talents or skills you have with us; baking, beading, birch bark gathering, drumming, etc. Without parent and community involvement we are not reaching the needs and goals of having cultural learning taught to our students. We need you-and your ideas- and your thoughts.
Fundraising is another way to help! Just Ask, I have a few ideas!
Please consider giving you time to make our school the best it can be!
