Position Description

Subject Advisors (SAs) share advanced knowledge and understanding of a subject discipline with fellow students. Attendance of drop-in hours and regular training meetings is required. Faculty recommendation required.

Qualifications

●  Experience in courses or learning experiences that meet departmental major requirements, as confirmed by faculty reference and academic record.

●  Desire to teach, tutor, or mentor other students and faculty (existing teaching experience and independent research experience is a huge plus). Approachable, sociable, and patient, esp. with different kinds of learners.

●  Curiosity to learn skills and subjects outside of one’s comfort zone; ability to have one’s ideas and expertise challenged; self motivated and self-directed learner

●  Punctuality, dependability, and ability to follow through with tasks

●  Strong communication skills

●  Ability to maintain and exist in a space that honors differences in gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, religion, language access, mental, and physical ability

●  Students of any class year are welcome to apply

Job Duties

●  Hold drop-in hours for students who need support on homework and research assignments

●  Maintain work spaces

●  Participate in peer-to-peer learning opportunities

●  Train peers in a variety of learning styles

●  Develop educational resources to share with Oxy community (tutorial videos, written guides, creative exercises that enhance student learning experiences and sharpen critical analysis skills)

●  Ensure that you, your fellow assistants, and other students are maintaining culture of respect for others and the space

The Peer Learning Floor

The Peer Learning Floor (PLF) is located on the ground floor of Library and encompasses the: Critical Making Studio, O-Mac Lab, Writing Center, and Zone of Proximal Development (non-walled off work spaces). The Peer Learning Floor as a space is open 24/7 to Oxy students and community working groups (Regular Library operating hours). It is an open and vibrant atmosphere providing a place for students to work collaboratively on various projects and assignments. The Peer Learning Floor has drop-in hours for research, subject, and writing advising Sun-Thu from 5-11pm.

Peer Learning at Oxy
