Highlights:

  • Jr. Team Tennis: Jr. Team Tennis had a 17% increase in participation over last year. The HOA District Championships were played at Santa Fe TrailPark with 10 teams competing. The 14 and Under team from The National Golf Club of Kansas City advanced to JTT Nationals with a win at the MV Sectional Tournament.
  • High School Coaches Workshop: HOA hosted a successful USTA High School Coaches Workshop at Northland Racquet Club in July. Nineteen coaches attended the workshop led by Master Trainer Mike Woody of Midland, Michigan. The workshop also included presentations by Dr. Andrew Jacobs, a top U.S. Sports Psychologist, and Kevin Garner, Executive Director with Missouri State High School Activities Association.
  • Diversity Outreach: HOA, working with International Marketing, hosted a QuickStart clinic for first and second grade students at WestviewElementary School in Olathe. Westview has a large Latino enrollment. About 55 students participated in the activities. A follow-up PE tennis unit was conducted by the school’s PE teacher, with plans for a school in-service training in 2011 for all of the school district’s elementary PE teachers.
  • Pro Circuits: Both USTA Pro Circuit events returned to HOA District again this year. The $50,000 Q Hotel & Spa Women’s Pro Tennis Classic hosted by Kansas City United Tennis at the PlazaTennisCenter enjoyed a successful second year. HOA played host to several events including a Ladies Night, a League Night, and an Adopt-A-Player event. St. Joseph’s Heartland Clinic USTA Women’s Pro Tennis Classic also provided several community events, including a Kid’s Day which introduced about 200 youth to QuickStart Tennis, and a “Screening for Life” Breast Cancer Tournament. Proceeds from the tournament went to the Patee House / Social Welfare Board for breast cancer screenings for financially strained women in the St. Joseph community.
  • NJTL: Two NJTL programs in HOA, GenesisSchool and KIPPEndeavorAcademy, welcomed USTA staff member Dan Limbago for a site visit in May. Both NJTL’s are participants in the First Serve program.
  • WTT: The World Team Tennis National Finals were held in Kansas City. Heart of America was actively involved with promoting this event and helping to make it a success. In addition, several organizations and tennis clubs in HOA assisted with QuickStart activities on the Missouri Valley Sport Court throughout the entire WTT season in July.
  • Officials: Jeanne Chavez, HOA Officials Chairman, was instrumental in the recruitment and training of 15 new officials for HOA.
  • HOA Board: The 2010-12 Officers and Board of Directors took office at the HOA Annual Meeting held on November 18 at the Hallbrook Country Club. Bruce Baldwin was elected President.

Highlights:

  • District Youth Highlights:
  • Iowa District Junior Team Tennis Playoffs was held on July13 in Ames. Nine teams participated.
  • 314 Junior Team Tennis numbers reported on TennisLink.
  • The district approved a pilot JTT/QST incentive program to assist organizations register their players through TennisLink. It was approved again next year.
  • District Adult Highlights:
  • Adult League participation increased (2345 league participants) an increase of 20.3%over 2009.
  • Four league teams won at Sectionals qualifying for National Championships.
  • Two USTA Sectional League Championships were held in Iowa (Des Moines area and Waterloo).
  • Cindy Rasche (Camanche) received the National High School Coach of the Year in September from the USPTA.
  • Organizational Highlights:
  • District Fall Meeting – October 17 in Des Moines
  • 30 people attended including Mary Buschmann, thanks for coming
  • New executive board was installed
  • The Iowa District awarded $10,534 in District grants to 15 organizations:
  • $8,609 in Community Development grants to 11 organizations
  • $1,925 in Tennis in the Parks grants to 4 organizations
  • The ITA Awards Clinic & Luncheon was held on Saturday, November 14 in Ames. The guest speaker was Blake Starkey, tennis coach for the University of Missouri.
  • UrbandaleParks & Recreation received $65,000 to help build 8 new tennis courts at the WalkerJohnstonPark. The project cost $360,000 total with $40,000 coming from USTA National, $20,000 from USTA MissouriValley and $5,000 from Greater Des Moines Tennis Association (a local CTA).
  • Donna Farley functioned as Chief Umpire for the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games in Lincoln, NE.
  • Three OPAF/First Volley clinics were held in the Iowa District (Cedar Falls, Rock Island, IL, and Iowa City). The clinic population targeted wheelchair and amputee clients.

Highlights:

  • USTA Organizational membership growth of 16 more organizational members than 2009.
  • Holliday Park Kids CTA in Topekahosted one of the two NJTL Rallies in the USTA/MV Section, with 568 children participating.
  • There were two QuickStart trainings and one Recreational Coaches Workshop Training
  • There were four USTA Sanctioned Quick Start Tournaments and five Quick Start leagues.
  • Distributed nearly $10,000 in Community Development Grant monies to over 18 communities in the district a substantial increase over 2009.
  • A USTA official’s school was held in 2010, and Kansas will provide funding to certify new and recertify existing officials in 2011.
  • In December 2010, a major wheelchair basketball tournament will be held in Pittsburg which will include an introduction to tennis during the tournament.
  • In furtherance of Kansas’ emphasis on maintaining and facilitating establishment of school tennis programs numerous school visits have occurred and a new schools program grant has been established and funding provided.

Pending Items:

  • Continued emphasis on maintaining and assisting school tennis programs so that no Kansas District school drops tennis for a lack of fundingin this time of significantbudget cuts.

USTA/MV Annual Nebraska District Report

District: Nebraska

Highlights:

  • Court Construction, Renovations, and Resurfacing in Nebraska
  • The Koch Family Tennis Center has received USTA funding toward the construction of four 60-foot QST courts. Three additional full-sized courts will by built, including lineage for 36 ft courts for the 8 & Under programming.
  • The Columbus Tennis Association will partner with Columbus High School to build six new courts in the spring of 2011.
  • The York Field House was completed this spring, including two indoor courts.
  • Grand Island Tennis Association has assumed management of the indoor tennis center, renovating and resurfacing four indoor courts. Plans are underway to build four lighted outdoor courts and resurface two existing courts with QST lines. Many of the renovations were accomplished with volunteers.
  • Fremont resurfaced 12 outdoor courts at Fremont High School.
  • Kearney- KPR and KTA teamed up to resurface four courts and build a shade structure at Harmon Park.
  • North Platte resurfaced eight tennis courts at Cody Park
  • USTA League Play is up 3.8 % overall, citing an increase of 20.4 % in the Seniors.
  • Omaha hosted the JCC Maccabi Games in August. Jewish athletes, ages 12-16 from the US, Israel, Mexico, Canada and Hungary, participated in the Olympics-style competition.
  • 2010 Special Olympics National Games (July 17-24) were held at the Nebraska Tennis Center in Lincoln, NE. Eighty-two athletes competed in singles, doubles, unified doubles and individual skills. Athletes and volunteers were treated to a clinic and exhibition unified doubles match featuring Andy Roddick.
  • A Junior Team Tennis Town Hall Meeting in the spring incited JTT participation in Western Nebraska in 2010. The JTT District Championships were held in Kearney, NE.
  • A District Tournament Director’s Workshop was held in conjunction with the fall district meeting in Omaha on Nov 7.
  • Stan Smith held a clinic in Omaha and was the keynote speaker for the NE District Awards and Hall of Fame Banquet on Nov 7.
  • Rock-n-Racquets was held in Omaha on Dec 3, featuring Roddick, Sampras and the Bryan Brothers.
  • 2010 Officials’ Training Schools were held in Omaha, Kearney and Grand Island. NE has 42 certified officials.

  • QuickStart Tennis participation will be included for 2011 CTA incentive funding from the District.

  • New ODTA District League Coordinator is Jose Falcon
  • New Oklahoma City League Coordinator is Marcie Byrne
  • 4,134 players participated in Oklahoma Adult Leagues during the 2010 season-a 6.9% increase over 2009
  • OKC Men’s 5.0 team finished 2nd at nationals
  • 18 new courts built and 3 re-surfaced at LaFortune Park in Tulsa. A new Pro Shop and 3 indoor courts are still to come.
  • $110,000 remodel of Pro shop and player lounge with outdoor monitors added at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
  • Oklahoma currently has 5,747 USTA members, up 34 from last year.
  • Five Oklahoma juniors are currently ranked #1 in Missouri Valley: Mia Lancaster (G18s), Caitlyn Calkins (G12s), David Hager (B14s), Zeke Clark (B12s), and Rhett Collins (B10s).
  • 3 new members inducted into Oklahoma Tennis Hall of Fame: Cliff Price, Col. Jim Provines, and Curtis Richmond.
  • 3 Oklahomans selected for Missouri Valley Hall of Fame this year: Tommy English, James Wadley, and Paul Lockwood.
  • Spencer Papa from Edmond was one of 20 juniors nationally invited to participate in the USTA National Training Center in Boca Raton, Florida.
  • Junior Team Tennis
  • 334 kids participated on 39 teams
  • 17 teams participated in 3 divisions at the District Championships
  • 3 teams advanced to sectionals

Highlights:

  • The District sanctioned 36 junior tournaments, including six novice tournaments.
  • Almost 3,000 juniors participated in the district tournaments.
  • St. Louisheld four MissouriValleyjunior events – Segment II Super I (511 participants), MV St. Louis Outdoor Futures (425 participants), MV G16s Indoor Futures at Kings Point and MV Segment III BG18s Sweet 16 at Kings Point.
  • The national junior tournaments include the St. Louis Junior Championship (on clay), BG16s Zonals, BG 18-16s Gateway Championship and BG18s National Open.
  • The CompetitiveTrainingCenter had a successful year. The CTC North Valley Rally and CTC Regional were in St. Louis.
  • Quickstart events were offered at several indoor clubs and the Gateway Jr. Grandprix.
  • 2010 Adult Leagues experienced 12% growth over 2009. Our inaugural Sr. Mixed season had 66 players. St. Louis had 7 teams advance to National Championships.
  • The National Public Parks Tennis Championships were held Aug. 2-7 with 451 players in 56 divisions. Participants hailed from 13 different Sections.
  • The US Open USTA Wheelchair Championship was held Aug. 31–Sept. 5 with 123 players in 19 divisions. Participants represented 11 countries and 12 USTA Sections.
  • The Jr. Team Tennis league ran in the summer with 188 players in three divisions.
  • The NetRushers NJTL and three other chapters organized an NJTL Kids Day on July 9 at ForestwoodPark in Ferguson. Approximately 225 kids from seven youth organizationsattended.
  • Lewis & ClarkCommunity College once again hosted the USTA’s Men’s Futures $10,000 Tournament in July.
  • The Steel Shop Tennis Club, a new facility with 5 indoor courts, opened in October in St. Charles.
  • The World TeamTennis St. Louis Aces played their 16th season this summer at DwightDavisTennisCenter.
  • Triple A Golf & Tennis Center reopened as The Highlands of Forest Park after extensive renovations.
  • WashingtonUniversity hosted the ITA Central Region Tennis Championships in October.

Highlights:

  • Jacque Croft celebrated her 30th Anniversary as Tournament Director for the USTA National Ladies 65, 75, 85 Indoor Championships. She ran the event at Midtown Racquet Club in Overland Park June 1st –June 6th. MissouriValley hosted a reception and Senior Athletes Information Fair with 3 presenters which included health & nutrition for the senior athlete, Massage therapy and Kinesio Taping and Physical Therapy and how to stay fit on the road. Therabands and information manuals were presented at the fair as gifts.
  • Scott Hanover celebrated his 5th year as Tournament Director for the USTA National Husband & Wife Mixed Doubles Hard Court Championship. MissouriValley hosted a Friday Fun night (with a 5 year wedding anniversary theme of wood) with a wood racquet mini tournament and a grilled buffet dinner at Clay View Country Club in Kansas City. Saturday night all players were invited to the Explorers, World Team Tennis, match at BarneyEllisPlaza in downtown Kansas City.
  • The 6 Adult section championship tournaments were bid out for 2010 & 2011 with new dates for each tournament and different venues. This allows players to have options of events if they don’t care to travel far from home.
  • The Adult Competition Committee has recommended guidelines for 18 year olds who wish to compete in Adult NTRP Tournaments. They may now play if they have a self rating completed before they register. Otherwise they must compete in the Open Divisiononly. The committee suggests that districts follow the same policy for consistency and better adult and junior player experience. 18 year olds are now allowed to participate in the USTA League Program.
  • STL was, once again the hosts of the National Public Parks Championship Tournament August 2nd-8th, 2010 at DwightDavisTennisCenter. The section hosted a pizza party for the competitors and the committee assisted in promoting the event by distributing posters and postcards. The event was a huge success with 451 unique players.

  • Bids will go out this month for the 2012 & 2013 Adult Section Tournaments. Deadline to submit a bid is February 27th, 2011.

Highlights:

  • USTAMV Section saw an 8.1% growth in league participation at year end verses 2009 year end. All but one district showed growth as well with Iowa leading with a 20.4% growth over last year.
  • League Sectionals were held in new locations for 2010. The Adult/Senior Championship I was hosted by Des Moines. The Adult/Senior Championship II was hosted by St Louis. The Super Doubles I was hosted by Waterloo, IA. The Super Doubles I I was hosted by Springfield. These same championships will be held in these cities for 2011.
  • A couple league teams placed at nationals this year- KS 3.5 Adult Team captained by Robert Bundy placed 4th; OK 5.0 Men’s team, captained by Tim Shanahan, placed 2nd being the national Finalists. Congratulations to them.
  • Winning teams from the USTAMV Senior Mixed divisions will for the first time advance to a national league championship in the Spring of 2011.
  • NTRP Year End ratings were published on November 29th, 2010. All participants may go to the TennisLink Leagues/ Find a Rating to view their new rating.
