Fall Festival

3rd Grade Lesson Plan

Theme: Sports

Games:

  1. Active Games:
  • Standing Long Jump– Have children get into two or three lines. Have a piece of masking tape on the floor as a starting spot and a tape measure extending out from the tape. Have the children jump from the taped line and measure how far they were able to go. Repeat and see if they can jump further.
  • Ball toss – cut holes in a large box of various sizes and place a point value next to each opening. (Small value next to a large hole, large value next to the smaller holes.) Have students take turns throwing three waffle balls and calculating their score. Trying to better their score on their next turn.
  • Free Throw shooting – attach a basketball goal to the dry erase board and give students 3 attempts to make a basket with a Nerf ball from a designated spot.
  1. Sit down games:
  • Penny Hockey –have students pair off and play hockey with three pennies.Instructions
  • The Face-off Arrange 3 pennies in a triangle along the edge of a table while your opponent creates a goal and goalie with his fingers at the other end, as shown. To start the game, flick the back penny to send all 3 pennies forward. Then begin moving the pucks down ice.
  • Advancing the pucks Using your fingertip, move the pucks down ice by flicking the rear penny between the other 2 (see above). If you mess up — your penny stops short or goes off the table, for instance — your opponent takes possession of the pennies for a new face-off.
  • He shoots, he scores! (He hopes) When you're close to the goal, take a shot. Flick the rear penny between the other 2 and past the goalie for a goal. After a score or a save, your opponent takes over with a face-off. For an added challenge, put one of the pennies head-side up and make it the only one you can shoot with.
  • Football Flick –teach the kids how to fold a triangular football out of paper and then practice “kicking” field goals with a partner who is using their hands as the goal post.

How to Play Paper Football:

-The Kickoff-

1. Toss a coin to see who will receive.

2. Place the paper football on the palm of your hands.

3. Next, with an upward stroke, strike the bottom edge of the tablewith your fingers. This should send the football into the air andonto the field. Where the football lands is where the flicking willbegin.

4. The object of the game is to score touchdowns. To get atouchdown, you must flick the ball with your finger and have theball stop with part of it hanging over the edge of the table (withoutfalling off the table). That scores 6 points. Players take turns, oneflick each, back and forth until someone scores. If the ball goes offthe table, your opponent gets to kick off. If you score a touchdown, you can kick an extra point.

-Kick an Extra Point-

1. Forming the goal post: The opponent places both elbows on thetable, with their thumbs touching together. Then they extend their

index fingers to form the uprights.

2. Field-goal kicker: Balancing the football vertically with your indexfinger, flick the football with your other hand to launch it in the air

(aim for your opponent’s forehead). If the ball sails between thetwo goals posts, you get 1 point.

Craft: Sports themed zipper clips

Use lanyard hooks, black plastic craft lace, sports beads and colored pony beads to make a fun zipper clip for sports bags and backpacks. Put lace threw the lanyard hook, put sports ball over both lace strings and add a colored bead and tie a knot. Add two colored pony beads to each lace string and tie another knot to secure.

Snack:

  1. Popcorn with m&m’s
  2. Gatorade bottles (small)
