Annual General Meeting

May 9, 2009 – 12:00 PM

Location- Rotary Center located across the street from the Dieppe Arena (Arthur LeBlanc Arena)

Dawn Currie, Speed Skate Canada’s Sport Development Director/Directrice, Developpement du sport attended our SSNB AGM to speak about the True Sport concept that Speed Skate is promoting to clubs.

The SSNB AGM meeting 1:00 PM.

1. Welcome: Ann Evans, chair of SSNB welcomes all delegates to the AGM. Opening of the meeting.

2.  Delegate Roll Call List is attached

3.  Call to Order: The meeting is called to order at 12h45. There were 24 club elected delegates and 4 elected-at-large delegates for a total of 28 votes. Quorum was calculated based on constitution requirements, which is 2/3 of votes, 15 votes were needed for a motion to be carried.

4.  Approval of Agenda: Moved Steve Harris and seconded by Roger Ouellette to approve agenda as submitted. MOTION CARRIED

5.  Approval of the Minutes of the 2008 SSNB AGM: Moved by Roger Ouellette and seconded by Vance Gibson to approve the 2008 AGM minutes as submitted. MOTION CARRIED

6.  Business arising from the last meeting minutes:

The following recommendation was submitted by the Fredericton Amateur Speed Skating Club Inc. was discussed:

That SSNB require all skaters to wear appropriate safety goggles (i.e. clear or yellow goggles is recommended) or approved full visor at all SSNB sanctioned and unsanctioned speed skating competitions/events. The goggles must be held in place by an elastic type band."

Rationale for change

Members of SSNB are a strong believer in good safety practices. Our skaters only have one set of eyes and therefore eye protection is critical during speed skating meets, practices and events.

No motion was made to accept the recommendation. Delegates wanted to know what type of glasses would qualify as being acceptable. There was also a request to have the opinion of an optometrist on the need to wear goggles while speed skating.

7.  Reports

A.  Finance: Don Harrington submitted the Financial Report.

B.  Athlete Development: Steve Harris submitted his report and thanked all AD Committee Members for their help during the past years while he was Director of Athlete Development.

C.  Competitions: Ann Evans (Acting Competitions Chair) submitted the report and thanked all of the committee for the dedication during the 2008-09 season.

D.  Officials: No report

E.  Coaching: Derrick MacLeod submitted his report attached

F.  Domestic Development: Marketing, Communications

G.  Technical Director: Peter Steele submitted his Technical Directors report

H.  Club reports (see Attached)

Moved by Ursina Meier and seconded by Larry Evans to accept the reports as submitted.

MOTION CARRIED.

8. Election of Officers: July 1st will be the turnover date for the newly elected directors The Director of Finance, Vice Chairperson / Chair of Athlete Development, Director of Coaching, and club reps from the Fredericton Amateur Speed Skating Club, Hampton Speed Skating Club, and Club de Patinage de Vitesse de Caraquet shall be elected in odd numbered years.

Don Harrington acted as election officer.

Positions to be filled – Odd Years (2009)

Vice Chairperson / Chair of Athlete Development - (Director at Large) Derrick MacLeod nominated Steve Harris. Don called for other nominations for Chairperson. Larry Evans seconded it. Steve Harris accepted and will fill the position for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 years.

Coaches – Chair (Director at Large) Jamie Smith nominated Derrick MacLeod. Don called for other nominations for Chairperson. Ursina seconded it. Derrick accepted and will fill the position for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 years.

Director of Finance – (Director at Large) Larry Evans nominated Don Harrington. Don called for other nominations. Steve Harris seconded it. Don accepted the position of Financial Chair.

Board reps for Fredericton Amateur Speed Skating Club, Hampton Speed Skating Club, and Club de Patinage de Vitesse de Caraquet – to be elected at club level

All MOTIONS WERE CARRIED.

9. New Business:

a) Notice of Motion – Constitution and Bylaw changes: No Motions were submitted

b) Notice of Motion - General: No Motions were submitted

c) General motions: NO Motions were submitted

d) SSNB Delegates to the 2009 SSC AGM in Richmond, BC, June 18, 19, & 20, 2009

A discussion to send 1 delegate to the SSC AGM was held. Proposal to send Roger Ouellette along with the Chairperson. Moved by Trevor Corey and seconded by Larry Evans to fund 1 member for the SSC AGM up to maximum of 2,000$ and in addition to Ann Evans.

MOTION CARRIED

e) SSC Appeal Board Moved by Roger Ouellette and seconded by Derrick MacLeod to nominate Fran Harris and Roger Cole as New Brunswick delegates to the SSC Appeal Board.

10. Adjournment:

Special Guest Speaker

Sandra Chenard, Speed Skate Canada Level V Competition Stewards, attended our SSNB AGM to speak on the importance of our Officials and SSC Officials Certification Program. Sandra has achieved the highest level of training as a Meet Coordinator in Canada and is one of only two Canadians on the ISU list of Competition Stewards (Meet Coordinators). Sandra has been appointed as the SSC Short Track Technical Representative for the 2011 Canada Winter Games.

Canada Winter Games Program – (Following the Presentation on the Importance of SSNB Meet Officials) - Presenter Steve Harris

There was a presentation on the SSNB’s Perspective of the 2011 CWG & the New Brunswick Government’s Perspective of the up coming Canada Winter Games.

Interested parents and volunteers were encouraged to attend especially those whose child may try out for the 2011 Canada Winter Games.
