For the Moore-Bonfante family, “home for the holidays” takes on a whole new meaning this month, when they become the 179th family to purchase a safe, affordable homethrough Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia. On Monday, December 15 at 3:00 pm, Habitatsupporters and volunteers will join the community to welcome the Moore-Bonfante family into their new home at 2332 Greenwich Street in Point Breeze. The family will receive their house keys and open their front door for the first time—an amazing gift in time for the holidays, but one that the family has worked hard to achieve.

Rhonda, Roberto and their three children entered Habitat Philadelphia’s homeownership program in 2013.The family has finished 350 required Sweat Equity hours since then, building and repairing houses and attending homebuyer education workshops. They are purchasing their house from Habitat Philadelphia with a zero-interest, 30-year mortgage. Rhonda, who teaches dance at Temple University, is looking forward to the security and sustainability that affordable homeownership can provide. “My family and I have helped build homes for other partner families over the past two years—and now it’s our turn,” she says.“This house is going to be an anchor for my family. Owning a home is a simple thing—and it’s so powerful.”

The General Motors Foundation provided a $100,000 grant to support the construction of the Moore-Bonfante family’s home and a dedicated team of GM employees from the GM Philadelphia Parts Distribution Center volunteered throughout the building process. “The stability of a permanent home is such an important factor in building stronger families and communities,” said GM Foundation President Vivian Pickard. “We are committed to strengthening Habitat’s efforts in lending a hand to families who work so hard to make homeownership a reality.”

The Moore-Bonfantefamily’s house is one of six new energy-efficient homes that Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia is building on the 2300 blocks of Cross and Greenwich Streets. The new houses are being built to LEED Gold standards, helping homeowners to keep their utility bills low and empowering them to dedicate more money to other essentials like education, health care and retirement. These six homes will complement the other 19 that Habitat Philadelphia has built and rehabbed in South Philadelphia, and the 178 built city-wide since its founding in 1985.
