T-Shirt Sales Project

Mathematical Knowledge (40 points)

  • All answers are mathematically correct.
  • Answers are found using the correct algebraic equations with variables on both sides for Break-Even and Desired Profit.
  • All algebraic and mathematical steps and work are shown!
  • The math calculations are carried out in a sequential and logical order.

Strategic Knowledge and Explanation (40 points)

  • All the important parts of the problem are found and used properly.
  • All mathematical work and calculations done mentally or in your head are explained thoroughly.
  • Your letter to Mr. Hewson includes an explanation that includes why certain costs are Fixed and others are Variable.
  • Fixed and Variable Costs are correctly located, labeled, and placed correctly in your algebraic equations.
  • The definitions of Fixed cost, Variable Cost, Desired Profit, and Total Sales are described to Mr. Hewson in your explanation of why you set up your equation the way you did.
  • You must explain in a letter to Mr. Hewson what you did to solve each step of the problem and why you did each problem solving step.
  • A process of checking the correctness of your algebraic equations is carried out and explained to Mr. Hewson.

Recommendation (20 points)

  • A logical recommendation is provided based on your mathematical findings and the reasonableness for Mr. Hewson to sell his desired amount of t-shirts.
  • An original suggestion should be made to Mr. Hewson recommending how Mr. Hewson should expands his business (open at a different location, sell different kinds of shirts besides musical groups, sell t-shirts to with local school logos (Summit Hill Trojans), or sell t-shirts on the internet or in a catalog, etc.…).

Graph (10 points)

  • Your graph accurate represents your mathematical findings in the problem
  • Your graph has a title.
  • Your graph can compare the break-even and desired profit equations or fixed and variable costs.

Presentation (10 points)

  • Your presentation should be made as if Mr. Hewson was present.
  • Presentations should briefly summarize your mathematical findings, the strategies you used to solve the problem, your recommendations and original suggestions.
