It was part of Pakistan when it India and Pakistan gained independence in 1947. West Pakistan and East Pakistan were separated by over 1,000 miles. They were culturally very different. The government and economy were centered in West Pakistan. This angered East Pakistan. They began to push for independence. They became the independent country of Bangladesh in 1971.
