Title of Your Legend

Location (Example: Versailles, KY)

LEGEND

Here is where you should outline the basics of your legend. What is the legend? Describe in detail all the happenings associated with the legend. Be very detailed. This section is NOT proven fact. This section does NOT include interviews. The picture at the top of the page should have a picture related to your legend. Make sure it isn’t blurry. Try to make it the same size as the one I have put on my page. Your account of the legend will probably end up being much longer than this example paragraph is.

HISTORY

This section deals with the history behind the myth. Relate the history of the area associated with the legend. This may include information from death records, building histories, newspaper articles about the legend, etc. Take all the research you have gathered and summarize it here in this section. Use paragraphs to break up large sections of text. For the second picture try to use a photograph that you took of the legend area. Make sure you remember to include a caption.

INTERVIEWS / PERSONAL ACCOUNT

Louis Schneider, Age 35, Versailles, KY—Here is where you tell what Louis has to say about your legend. Make sure you include his age and his location. If he lives in Omaha, NE, he probably doesn’t know much about Kentucky folklore and legends. Paraphrase his words. Don’t use all direct quotes. If Louis has nothing interesting to say, then it wouldn’t be good to use him as one of your interviews.

William Finker, Age 83, Lexington, KY—Here is where you quote what William has to say. If William said the exact same thing as Louis, then he isn’t a very interesting source and shouldn’t be included. Only present additional or contrasting information. Don’t forget that an original photograph of your interviewee would count as a document source.

PERSONAL ACCOUNT / JOURNAL. You MUST have a personal reflection on the investigation and/or a “written snapshot” of what it felt and looked like to be there in person, whether you have interviews or not!

LOCATION

The main establishment where the woman is said to be sighted is on 113 N. Elm in Versailles, KY. (Here is where you give the location of your legend -- where it happened, where it is, or in the case of a person, where they were born and were buried. Get specific, but not too specific. We need a location, not MapQuest directions.)

SOURCES

List all the outside resources consulted for the project: websites, books, etc. Use MLA format. Please list them alphabetically by the last name of their authors. For more information on entries in MLA format, go to http://www.bibme.org/

PLEASE READ THE GUIDELINES ON THE FOLLOWING TWO PAGES! IF YOU DON'T FOLLOW THEM, YOUR GRADE WILL BE AFFECTED!

Paper Guidelines

(To receive full points on your paper these guidelines must be followed exactly)

1.  Pictorial Header

Choose an appropriate picture to place at the top of your page. This should relate closely to your legend. It should take up no more than a third of the page. Look at your example. Make sure that it is centered. If you are an artist, you may draw original art and place it at the top – but if you can’t draw, don’t get cute with stick figures.

2.  Heading

This should be one line that tells us what legend this page will tell us about. Don’t put “The Legend of…” before it. Simplify. This should be in 24 pt. font.

3.  Sub-Heading

One space below the main heading, put the closest town with which the myth is identified in 14 pt. font. Remember to capitalize both letters of KY and put a comma in between the town and the state.

4.  Legend

The rest of your entry should be in 12 pt. font – no script or hard to read styles! Make a centered, all-caps heading for this section. Here is where you should tell about your legend. DO NOT simply copy what you found on the Internet. I have access to these sites as well, and I will know if you did so. This is NOT the place for specific eye-witness accounts, personal opinions, or research. Just summarize the legend as thoroughly, yet concisely, as you can.

5.  History

This is where your research comes in. This section needs a heading the same as “Legend” did. I want to know every scrap of detail you found on this subject. If you don’t have anything to put into this section, you’re in trouble. Researching the legend is the primary part of this assignment. Interview material or personal reflections should NOT go in this section.

6.  Interviews / Personal Accounts

Here is where you should put the testimonies of people who claim to have seen the phenomenon that you are researching. Paraphrase and summarize what they said; only include a few quotes if they are particularly vivid or memorable. Before each account, give the person’s name, their town of residence, and their age. Remember, the transcript of the interview questions and their actual answers will be provided as part of your research.

Whether you have interviews or not, provide a personal reflection on the investigation. This can be in a diary form, or in a short overview. Did your feelings on the subject change in the course of the research? How did you apply what you knew about legend, archetype, research strategies, etc? What were some memorable facts you learned / moments you had? What would you do differently next time (or if you had more time)? If you actually visited the site in person, talk about what you felt and what you saw. Be vivid and detailed!

7.  Location

This is where you list the location for the phenomenon. If it always happens at a certain building, list the building and give slightly detailed directions. Example of directions: “The Riverside Inn can be visited in Versailles, KY and is located just off Trainbridge Rd.” If the legend is more of a person than a place or event, tell us where the person was born, and where they are buried, in case we want to visit the cemetery!

8.  Sources

List all the outside sources used in the project: websites, books, articles, etc. Use MLA format, and list them alphabetically (by last name of author).

Other Requirements

THREE pictures are required to be inserted into the page at some point. These can be the same as the pictures you used for your visual aid.

Grammar Errors and Typos should not be present in your paper. Read over your copy to catch simple mistakes. Spell check can’t catch everything.

Please type this paper in Microsoft Word. The individual papers will be submitted to Turnitin or I will not grade it! You will also print me one hard copy.
